Second Sight. Photographs by Sally Mann. Introduction by Jane Livingston. David R. Godine, Boston, 1983. First Edition. Large square Quarto. Heavy pictorial wrappers known as a flexi-binding. 72 pp.,
Sally Mann's first monograph gives a cross-section of this young Virginia photographer's output. Included are her early landscapes from 1971--1975, as well as portraits of women and her platinum prints. Also presented here is the "Lewis Law Portfolio," evocative images from a construction site made with an 8x10 view camera. These early Mann photographs, reproduced on matt paper, were poetic and stylistically unique for their time, presaging Mann's later work. "If she never takes another picture, Sally Mann has left her mark on photography with this book."--George Tice
