Josef Sudek Fotografie. Text by Lubomir Linhart. SNKLHU (Statni Nakladatelstvi Krasne Literatury, Hudby a Umeni), Prague, 1956. First Edition. Decorative stamped cloth. Small Quarto. 46 pp (text), 232 gravures, 6 fold-out pages.
Considered by many to be the most beautiful Sudek monograph ever published (though it predates Sudek's death by twenty years), Josef Sudek Fotografie includes a broad spectrum of this great Czech photographer's work. It contains six fold-out pages, each including two panoramic photographs, along with early cathedral photographs, still lifes, nudes, landscapes, and photographs of his beloved Prague. The dates of these photographs range from 1915 to 1955. The frontispiece is a photo-portrait of Sudek by Josef Ehm.
The fore edge of the text block has some denting which affects nearly half the book in the form of minor creases to the outer edges of the pages. However this doesn’t intrude into the luscious gravure plates. One of the fold-out pages shows edge wrinkles. Otherwise this is a Fine copy in a beautiful illustrated dustjacket. The dustjacket shows some minor edge wear and chipping to the top and bottom of the spine. The jacket exhibits some slight browning, particularly on the spine and is protected in a library jacket.
