Men Without Masks. Faces of Germany, 1910-1938. Introduction by Gunther Sander, foreword by Golo Mann. New York Graphic Society, Greenwich, 1973. First Edition. Quarto. Silver letter on dark gray cloth. 314 pages, 275 gravure illustrations.

This extraordinarily beautiful book, printed in gravure, was the first U.S. retrospective on the work of this German master. From the jacket: "The pictures in this book are selected from Sander's lifework: peasants, soldiers, workers, businessmen, politicians, children, revolutionaries. With artifice or retouching--which Sander scorned--these human beings look at us with an individuality that makes them totally representative of their own time and place. They are Germany before World War II, the Germany of the Weimar Republic. This is August Sander's portrait of Germany, and as his son remarks in the biographical essay that accompanies these pictures, "the last thing August Sander ever meant to do was to life.'"

A tight, crisp copy. The dustjacket has several oblong holes 1/8”-1” long, with abrasions. These also affect the back cover in the form of light gouges and abrasions to the cloth. The jacket shows some edge wear and several small tears to the top of the spine and rear cover, and there is a small dark stain on the lower right of the front jacket cover. The front jacket flap has several wrinkles from folding.
