This lot consists of two John Heartfield books: Africa Drums by Richard St. Barbe Baker (in a photomontage dustjacket by Heartfield), and the monograph John Heartfield by Eckhard Siepmann (shown).

Africa Drums. Richard St. Barbe Baker. The Adventurers Club, London, n.d. (circa 1940). First edition. Octavo. Cloth in photomontage dustjacket. 159 pp. + interspersed halftone photographs. The author was one of the only non-Africans to be made a blook-brother of the Kiama, the secret society of Africa. The text discusses the drum language, ceremonies and customs, crocodile catches, forest dwellers, and more. The dustjacket illustration is a photomontage by John Heartfield, superimposing photographs of two tribal drums on a photograph of a tribal gathering with an overscript of red lettering. Near fine copy with one tiny mark at very base of spine; the back panel of the dustjacket is lightly soiled and has an old faint stain at outer bottom corner. In a Brodart-style clear protective jacket.

John Heartfield. Eckhard Siepmann. Introduzione di Mario de Micheli. Gabriele Mazzotta Editore, Milano, 1978. Octavo. Thick illustrated wrappers. 256 pp. A heavily illustrated monograph on Heartfield's political photomontage work for periodicals, book jackets, etc. Some of the most powerful were used as covers for the periodical AIZ. The text places Heartfield's contribution within the artistic context of Dadaism and within the historical context of the rise and domination of Nazism in Germany. A fine copy.
