Bellocq. Photographs From Storyville, The Red Light District of New Orleans. Reproduced from Prints made by Lee Friedlander. Introduction by Susan Sontag. Interviews edited by John Szarkowski. Random House, New York, 1996. First American edition. Large quarto. Cloth with photo-illustrated dustjacket. 83 pp.

Bellocq's Storyville photographs were taken in the legalized red light district of New Orleans around 1912 and are all that remains of the photographer's work. His glass negatives were discovered and printed by the photographer Lee Friedlander, and published for the first time in 1970 in a book sponsored by The Museum of Modern Art. Friedlander interviewed people who had known the misshapen Bellocq and the interviews were edited by John Szarkowski for the first book, and the text is reprinted here. Bellocq's artistry is considerable, and he reveals the personalities of the Storyville prostitutes with compelling honesty. Beautifully printed in the original sepia tones by Amilcar Pizzi in Italy.

A fine copy; light scuffs and shallow indented line on plain rear panel of the dustjacket.
