Ward 81. Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark. Text by Karen Folger Jacobs. With an Introduction by Milos Forman. Designed by Arne Lewis. Simon and Schuster, New York, 1979. First edition. Oblong quarto. Photo-illustrated stiff wrappers.
96 pp.
A powerful and intimate portrait of the life of women in a psychiatric ward in The Oregon State Hospital shot over a period of thirty-six days. Mark first visited the ward in 1975 when she documented the filming of director Milos Forman's Oscar winnning film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The photographs in this book show the women, who were considered dangerous to themselves and/or to others, both in their private hellish worlds and as they interact with each other or the photographer. Increasingly difficult to find.
A near fine copy, with a few soft creases on the covers from handling. |
