"No matter how passionately [Stettner] may become involved with what is most immediate and commonplace around us, he does not allow himself to be seduced by the picturesque. [His] stimulant, his pre-established theme is our natural environment, which he reveals with the utmost accuracy and the simplicity of great art"--from Brassai's introduction

Louis Stettner's New York, 1950s-1990s. Introduction by Barbara Einzig. Rizzoli, New York, 1996. 128 pp. Quarto. First edition. SIGNED on title page. Hardbound with quarter cloth. No jacket as issued. Black-and-white reproductions.
Very Fine.

Of all the photographers identified with New York, Stettner is most closely aligned with the aesthetic tradition of (mostly French) Humanist documentary (as represented by Kertesz, Cartier-Bresson, Boubat, Ronis, Doisneau and others). A tasteful Rizzoli production this volume offers one of the best overviews of Stettner's long career.
