Cesko-Slovenska Armada [The Czechoslovakian Army]. Photographs by Jiri Jenicek with design by Ladislav Sutnar. Neubert for VOK, Prague, 1938. Quarto. First Edition. Stiff photo-illustrated wraps. 80 gravure reproductions.
Jiri Jenicek's photographs of the Czech army are a fascinating blend of propaganda, straight reportage and New Objectivist aesthetics.
While his name might be little known today, Sutnar, who designed this volume, is one of the giants of twentieth century graphic design, having pioneered many of the practices that are still current in information graphics. Like Jan Tschichold, Sutnar synthesized European avant-gardist tendencies, which, as curator Allon Shoener has said, "provided the base for further extension of new design vocabulary and new design means".
Near Fine; creasing to lower and fore-edges (typical of this title); joint lightly abraded; shallow crease to upper corner.
