Mother and Child. Nell Dorr. Harper & Brothers, 1954. First edition. Square octavo. Cloth-backed boards illustrated with photographic light abstraction. Unpaged. Tipped-in statement from the author mounted on verso of photo-illustrated front endpaper. LAID IN: Publisher's original four page prospectus, with two pages of text and two full-page gravure images.
Dorr explores the universality of motherhood in her powerful series of rich gravure photographs and accompanying prose poem. Her photographs of children show their curiosity, love of nature, and sense of awe at the world around them, while her images of mothers have a strong spiritual sense. Dorr herself had three daughters and six grandchildren. She and her husband, the scientist John Van Nostrand Dorr founded The Dorr Foundation, and offered this book "in the spirit of friendship between the women of the United States and the women of other lands."
A fine copy with only the slightest rubbing to board extremities; minor chipping
and rubbing to some edges of the dustjacket. |
