Evidence
Photographs by Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel. Text by Sandra Phillips and Robert Forth
Distributed Art Publishers', New York, 2003. 108 pp., 25 black-and-white and 61 duotone illustrations, 9¾x9".

Over the past few years—really ever since the publication of Andrew Roth's fantastic and hotly debated The Book of 101 Books—several of the titles listed there have found their way back to the printer, given new life as either facsimile reprints or in brand-new editions. William Eggleston's Guide (cat# PK780H), Joel Sternfeld's American Prospects (cat# PK888H), and Moi Ver's Paris (cat# PK814S) immediately come to mind. Evidence now joins that short list. Originally published in 1977 to much acclaim, Evidence is a rather straightforward book. David Levi Strauss sums it up in his description in The Books of 101 Books. "The concept for this book is clear-select photographs intended to be used as objective evidence and show that it is never that simple..." Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan combed through the photographic archives and repositories of over 100 corporations and government, educational, and medical institutions. Presented as formal objects, these evidential images are transformed into art photographs, calling into question all sorts of basic assumptions about the nature of truth and objectivity. This new edition contains a fresh group of photographs from a previously untapped archives, as well as a scholarly essay by Sandra Phillips of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
