Two New Portfolios from Mark Citret: Structures/Architectural & Nature/Landscapes
Quietude, both in the natural and the built environment, permeates the work of California photographer Mark Citret. His gelatin silver photographs, which he refers to as "vellum" prints, are beautifully toned and printed on an obscure, now discontinued Kodak paper. The paper has a smooth, vellum-like surface, is extremely light in weight, and, through Citret's unique combination of toning procedures, yields a tonality whose warmth seems to accelerate into the highlight areas of the print.

Davin Ellicson's portfolio Maramures
"These photographs are from an ongoing reportage exploring the folk culture of peasants living in the Maramures region of Romania, the most traditional area of Europe. My photographs are meant to celebrate the peasants' simple, yet spectacular way of life that is intimately connected to the land. Ultimately, I hope that my work will stimulate the viewer to reflect on the consequences of a globalizing Western culture while also provoking thought about the importance of cultural preservation."—Davin Ellicson |

 | Open for Bidding: Frank's Classic The Americans--Scarce 1st Italian Edition! Like the first French edition, Les Américains, with texts printed on facing pages, the incredibly rare Italian edition of Frank's acerbic documentary of post-war American life comes across more as a biting exposé of the ennui and provincialism lurking beneath the surface than as a "sad poem sucked out of America," in Kerouac's famous words. The design and format, including Saul Steinberg's cover illustration, are almost identical to the Robert Delpire's 1958 edition.
Also on the block: rare titles by Narahara and Hosoe; signed books by Clark, DeCarava, and Koudelka, and much more! |

Julian Germain: For Every Minute You Are Angry You Lose Sixty Seconds of Happiness
"Over eight years photographer Julian Germain documented Charlie, an elderly man living alone on England's Southern Coast—unfettered by the misplaced aspirations of the modern world; instead he spent the last years of his life absorbed in memories of his family, his love for flowers, music, and the quotidian pleasures of the crossword. Germain's charming photographs are a beautiful, gentle portrait of a gentleman in his twilight years."—the publisher READ MORE

Danny Lyon: The Destruction of Lower Manhattan
In 1967, incredible sixty acres of mostly nineteenth-century buildings in lower Manhattan were slated for demolition, all below Chambers Street, including the seven-acre site where the
World Trade Centers would eventually stand...Thirty-eight years after these photographs were made, many of them are the only record that survives of entire blocks of mainly nineteenth-century buildings that once lined Fulton Street, and West Street along the Hudson."—the publisher READ MORE

Ellis Island Portraits 1904-1920
"Throughout his tenure as a registry clerk with the Immigration Division of Ellis Island, Augustus F. Sherman systematically photographed more than 200 families, groups, and individuals while they were being held by customs for special investigations. This volume collects and provides an essential revaluation of Sherman's striking portraits, which predate August Sander's cataloging efforts by several years."—the publisher READ MORE

photo-eye Booklist: 2005 Summer
photo-eye is pleased to announce the transformation of our quarterly Booklist into a 100% subscription-based magazine with a 4-issue price of only $20. The Booklist is handsomely designed and intelligently edited, with articles about photobook publishing, interviews with photographers and book makers, and, of course, our much anticipated survey of the best new photobooks from around the world. There is absolutely no other magazine like it.
Over a period of 25 years, the photo-eye Booklist grew from a single typewritten page in 1979, into a respected specialty book catalogue—must-reading for photobook lovers. The latest step in our evolution represents the culmination of several years of concerted editorial development, including more in-depth writing, new features of interest to collectors and photographers, and a summer 2004 re-design.
