Cara Barer's portfolio Of Words, Paper, and Shapes: The Book Project
"A random encounter with the Houston Yellow Pages on Drew Street was the initial inspiration for this project. After photographing that abandoned book, I realized that I owned many books that were no longer of use to me, or anyone else. With the discarded books I am attempting to blur the line between objects, sculpture, and photography."—Cara Barer

Adams chronicled the Denver metropolitan area from 1970-1974. His desolate images of suburban housing developments, shopping malls, cars, and supermarkets mourn the victory of consumerism over our so-called love of nature and rugged individualism. The book is a subtly devastating portrait of the infiltration of mass-production in the American landscape.

Richard Misrach: Golden Gate Richard Misrach: Golden Gate
"We are in the presence of that uniquely photographic and uniquely American phenomenon: the documentary sublime. (Golden Gate) takes you, metaphorically and literally, as far west as you can get. Just as Frederic Edwin Church's colossal Niagara (1857) still surpasses the iconic familiarity of the location, so Misrach's pictures make us see an overphotographed subject in a new light; literally."—Geoff Dyer READ MORE

Burns Archive: Sleeping Beauty II Burns Archive: Sleeping Beauty II
This volume expands the history of early postmortem and memorial photography, and continues the exploration of the subject to present day. Several new topics are surveyed, and four new major themes are addressed in detail: family bonds, grief and mourning; the significant differences between American and European postmortem photography; the artistry of posthumous mourning photographs; and a new grieving ritual using photographs. Photographs from over 15 countries are examined. Extensive captions accompany some 140 new images, and a detailed chronology and bibliography aid further research.—the publisher READ MORE

From a Studio in Arkansas, a Portrait of America
"Dead for half a century, Mike Disfarmer, the eccentric portrait photographer from Heber Springs, Ark., has drawn modest yet respectful attention in recent decades. From the 1920's to the 50's, he photographed a steady stream of townspeople in his Main Street studio in an American Gothic style of portraiture that was singularly his own......Now, a trove of recently discovered vintage prints is generating renewed interest in his work."—Philip Gefter, The NY Times

photo-eye is pleased to announce the transformation of our quarterly Booklist into a 100% subscription-based magazine with a 4-issue price of only $20. The Booklist is handsomely designed and intelligently edited, with articles about photobook publishing, interviews with photographers and book makers, and, of course, our much anticipated survey of the best new photobooks from around the world. There is absolutely no other magazine like it.

Over a period of 25 years, the photo-eye Booklist grew from a single typewritten page in 1979, into a respected specialty book catalogue—must-reading for photobook lovers. The latest step in our evolution represents the culmination of several years of concerted editorial development, including more in-depth writing, new features of interest to collectors and photographers, and a summer 2004 re-design. We hope you enjoy our new magazine and support us in this exciting endeavor. Thank you for your help in making this publication a reality.
