Picturing Some Shocks That Flesh Is Heir To
"With war photographs confronting us daily, do we need an exhibition to remind us of the body's vulnerability? But the havoc caused by war is only one aspect of it. There is disease, domestic violence, environmental pollution, the enfeeblement of old age, starvation, drug addiction and more - much more. It's a gloomy picture and "The Body at Risk: Photography of Disorder, Illness and Healing" at the International Center of Photography is not for the squeamish. But the show is not all downbeat."—Grace Glueck, The NY Times

On the Block: Hosoe's Embrace (1st edition) On the Block: Hosoe's Embrace (1st edition)
An iconic figure of post-war Japanese art, Hosoe was an intimate of Mishima and Butoh visionary Tatsumi Hijikata. Heavily influenced by Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind, then at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Hosoe and several other young Japanese photographers founded the VIVO agency as reaction against the coolly objective documentary style exemplified by Ken Domon (1909-1990). His depictions of the body have a Surrealist quality that is startlingly intimate, yet also serves to render the flesh totally abstract and strange. The Embrace series was produced in 1969-1970.
