David Burdeny's portfolio Shorelines
Made along the shorelines of Japan, Northern France, and the Pacific Northwest, this recent body of work thematically continues my interest in the thresholds that divide and connect the sea to land.

Embedded between the natural and domestic, these landscapes are often found at the periphery of parking lots, highways, urban parks, and public beaches. Each day these spaces are made and unmade and I am drawn to them for the weightlessness that lingers after activity ceases.—David Burdeny

Open for Bidding: Ugo Mulas: New York: The New Art Scene Open for Bidding: Ugo Mulas: New York: The New Art Scene
"Inspired by the strong American presence at the 1964 Venice Biennale, the Italian photographer Ugo Mulas made three extended visits to New York over the following years. The result [is this] massive, handsomely designed volume [that] captures the art world at one of its most volatile and vivid peaks...[Mulas] was ideally suited to infiltrate that scene as a sympathetic and unobtrusive observer...With more than 500 photos reproduced in heavily inked, knockout black-and-white, the book has a marvelous scope. Its arresting cover image—a pair of New York cops confronting a gaggle of bohemians at a party in Andy Warhol's Factory—isn't typical, but it suggests something of the scene's exhilaration and notoriety..."—Vince Aletti, in The Book of 101 Books

On the block in separate lots for two more weeks: three outstanding prints by Helen Levitt.

Robert Stivers: Sanctum Robert Stivers: Sanctum
"Stivers takes us into alcoholic twilight. Shuddering exiles in watery purgatory, the human figures as well as forests, clouds, plants, works of art and even architecture seem never actually to have existed...Each photograph visualizes the anguished lament of the current that runs through him. . . . All of this mirrors his dream books and journals, where the trials of actual experience and his mind's nocturnal dream machinery are indistinguishable.—Eugenia Parry

"McGinley's newest work signals a departure from the urban youth culture images for which he is best known; he has been working in natural settings outside New York City, creating specific situations for his subjects to lose themselves in the moment. Chris Shaw: Life As a Night Porter Chris Shaw: Life As a Night Porter
"Chris Shaw spent ten years working in London hotels, all-the-while using his camera to both document the hotels' unexpected human spectacles and keep himself awake though the long hours of his shift...Shaw's images transcend the physical boundaries of a place, and instead capture a state of mind in which few people would choose to stay more than a night."—the publisher

Steve Pyke: Post Partum Steve Pyke: Post Partum
"The work in these two companion books is from of a series of images by Steve Pyke celebrating the beauty and attraction of the working tool—in these instances, focusing on instruments that may be used at a birth and to carry out an autopsy. When Pyke was invited to photograph the Post Mortem tools by Guy's Hospital in London, he thought it would be interesting also to show tools used at the other end of the life cycle.

Steve Pyke has been working as a staff photographer on The New Yorker since early 2005. He has worked for many of the world's leading magazines, and his photographs have been widely exhibited in the United States, Europe and Japan."—the publisher READ MORE
