| Nancy Rexroth: Boys Flying, Amesville, Ohio, 1976 While her book Iowa has been something of a cult item among collectors, with the popularity of the Holga, Diana, and other 'toy' cameras, Nancy Rexroth's casually surreal work is finding a new audience. As Jonathan Greene writes, Rexroth produced "perhaps the most coherent and mysterious pictorial work of the seventies. [She] is an absolutely intuitive artist. Her beautifully printed and sequenced book of reveries and memories, Iowa, is a testament to the persistence of traditional American pictorialism." |

Edited by Ingrid Verdegem: The Quest for the Black Rose
"Botanists are on the case, trying to solve the mystery of the black rose: Does it exist? Has it ever? It seems that the only solid fact surrounding this flower is that people have been searching for it for centuries-and are still searching today."—the publisher READ MORE

In the midst of the seemingly endless turmoil in the Middle East, we would like to take a moment to share a selection of books that reflect on the beauty of the land and people who are caught in the destruction.
Three books, a series on Near Eastern cities, come from one of France's most prestigious fine-art publishers, Marval: Alger: Photographiee Au XIXe Siecle; Photographs of Beirut: 1840-1918; and Damas: Photographs of Damascus, 1840-1918. These books feature reproductions of 19th and early 20th photographs. All come from Europe; backorders will thus be somewhat delayed.
Steidl's new fall titles concerning the Middle East include Come Again, a Polaroid-style sketchbook by Robert Frank of the aftermath of the Lebanese civil war and Larry E. McPherson's Beirut City Center, which documents the city's restoration betweeen 2002-2004.
Finally, de.MO, the publisher who brought us Tsunami: A Document of Devastation, also released Vanishing, "a collection of 16 photo essays...[of] endangered life forms and ruined environments, human catastrophes and destruction-resulting in vanishing cultures."

This week in Santa Fe we are celebrating our annual Indian Market. In addition to the art and festivities, photo-eye is pleased to bring you several books relating to Native American culture.
We Walk in Beauty is Gary Auerbach's self-published book of portraits. The photographer invited his subjects to answer a series of questions; their answers are paired with the photographs. There will be an exhibition of Auerbach's work and a book signing this week-end at Unit D, here in Santa Fe.
Navajo Nation 1950: Living with the Dine is a record of Jonathan Wittenberg's life among the Navajo.
Edward Curtis (1868-1952) is perhaps the most well known photographer of native peoples. Two books are by Curtis are available: a small book from Taschen, simply titled Edward S. Curtis and The Women from Bulfinch. Click the title to purchase.
