Simonne Holm: Rana Temporaria opens this Friday
Opening this Friday, September 22nd, in the photo-eye Gallery is our new show of the work of Simonne Holm. The series, entitled Rana Temporaria, follows the daily metamorphosis of the Danish frog through its 89 day cycle from tadpole to full-grown adult. Originating as photograms, the work integrates elements from nature, art and science, blurring the line between documentary photography and scientific observation. Please join us from 5 to 7 o'clock in the evening for the show. We will have copies of the book Rana Temporaria on-hand in the gallery, all signed by the artist.

Our bookstore will also be open Friday evening. The bookstore gallery is currently showing new color work from Russia by Sasha Rudensky, along with Debbie Fleming Caffery's Katrina work, which was recently published in the show catalog Hurricane Images.

Ugo Mulas: New York: The New Art Scene Ugo Mulas: New York: The New Art Scene
"Inspired by the strong American presence at the 1964 Venice Biennale, the Italian photographer Ugo Mulas made three extended visits to New York over the following years...With more than 500 photos reproduced in heavily inked, knockout black-and-white, the book has a marvelous scope. Its arresting cover image—a pair of New York cops confronting a gaggle of bohemians at a party in Andy Warhol's Factory—isn't typical, but it suggests something of the scene's exhilaration and notoriety..."—Vince Aletti, in The Book of 101 Books

Josef Koudelka: Camargue Josef Koudelka: Camargue
A collection of panoramic photographs by Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka, this book takes as its subject the vast river delta south of Arles, France, known as the Camargue. This vast marshland stretches all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, providing ample space for over 400 species of birds, as well as wild horses and other large mammals. Koudleka's bucolic compositions eloquently capture the wild, isolated feel of the place. READ MORE

Joel Meyerowitz: Aftermath Joel Meyerowitz: Aftermath
"After the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11th, 2001, the world-renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz felt compelled to visit the site. [Ultimately,] he became the only photographer to be granted unimpeded access to Ground Zero. Once there he systematically began to document the wreckage followed by the necessary demolition, excavation and removal of tens of thousands of tonnes of debris...."—the publisher READ MORE

Brigitte Carnochan: Bella Figura Brigitte Carnochan: Bella Figura
"Brigitte Carnochan's photographs remind us, in this digital age, of the excitement of seeing the hand of the artist in the art. The 74 reproductions in Bella Figura are beautifully rendered to reveal the subtle details of Carnochan's oil paints on the gelatin silver surface. By adding her gardener's heart and dancer's sensibility to her photographer's eye, she has achieved a synthesis of subject and technique that is hers alone."—the publisher READ MORE

John Conway: Saskatchewan: Uncommon Views John Conway: Saskatchewan: Uncommon Views
"There are more roads per capita here than just about anywhere; some are not to be driven without a helmet. I remember, fondly now, when I first drove into a Saskatchewan pothole in 1973. I had just crossed the border on the Yellowhead highway, leaving Manitoba and all that is east forever behind me. My head hit the roof and the car radio stopped."—John Conway READ MORE

John Divola: Three Acts John Divola: Three Acts
John Divola: Three Acts gathers projects completed between 1974 and 1978. The work uses change as raw material — both the shifting landscape of the Los Angeles area and the boundary-testing art climate of the late 1970s. Visceral meets conceptual in this work that explores intersections between painting, performance, installation, and anthropology, via the ever hybrid medium photography... Reviewed by Julie Anand.
