Shomei Tomatsu: 2 scarce 1950s books Shomei Tomatsu: 2 scarce 1950s books
Two very scarce books that contain some of Tomatsu's earliest published work. After getting his start by sending pictures to Camera magazine, whose submissions were judged by Ken Domon, Tomatsu joined the production staff at Iwanami Photography Library, where he supplied photos for these two small books. In both subject matter and style, Tomatsu follows—sometimes more closely than others—Domon's strictures regarding the photographer's imperative to legibly represent contemporary life in post-war Japan.—reference, Anne Wilkes Tucker, et.al.,The History of Japanese Photography.

Kensuke Kazama: Yubari - SIGNED Kensuke Kazama: Yubari - SIGNED
The subject of Kensuke Kazama's beautiful Yubari is Hokkaido Prefecture's coal mining industry, which is responsible for nearly twenty percent of Japan's total electrical power. But despite the implications of such a massive contribution to the country's infrastructure, the legacy of coal mining is largely ignored or forgotten. Kensuke brings our attention to both the past and present legacy of coal mining, and aestheticizes the distinctive landscape created by the industry. READ MORE

Dave Anderson: Rough Beauty - SIGNED Dave Anderson: Rough Beauty - SIGNED
"Rough Beauty is a powerful photographic documentation of the people and places of Vidor, a poor and isolated town in rural southeastern Texas, most known for its long history as a Ku Klux Klan town. Anderson's images explore the character and burden - and the resilience and off-kilter beauty - of a community branded by its history. While Vidor is reviled for its history of Klan activities, behind this stereotype lingers a town filled with people who have not been able to lift themselves up and a crushing poverty sometimes reminiscent of the Great Depression. His images show a hidden beauty that lies dormant even in the roughest places."—the publisher READ MORE

Guido Mocafico: Medusa Guido Mocafico: Medusa
"The photographs in Guido Mocafico's Medusa arrest a species beyond the norm: Where is the head? Where are the eyes? The sex? His subjects are jellyfish, and as a photographer working in the vocabulary and the colors of nature, Mocafico regards them as the creation of an unparalleled artist."—the publisher READ MORE

"A wide-ranging collection of images by renowned photographer Robert Polidori is showcased to great effect in this Stern Portfolio. Boris Mikhailov: Case History Boris Mikhailov: Case History
"Case History is a collective portrait of those whose lives have fallen apart amidst the turmoil of epochal change [in the wake of the break-up of the Soviet Union], people whom history has left behind. Street kids getting high, adults looking for food, dirt-covered men and women washing themselves in Mikhailov's apartment, homeless people caressing each other's decrepit bodies: unflinchingly brutal and yet dignified images of aspects of the human condition that we prefer to repress."—the publisher READ MORE

Tacita Dean: FLOH Tacita Dean: FLOH
"The images in FLOH are photographs discovered by Tacita Dean in flea markets across Europe and America. Beautifully printed in a linen cover, slipcased volume, and each copy of the book is signed and numbered by the artist. 'Eventually, Tacita Dean stopped going to flea markets for fear of finding an image that 'should have been in the book', but then resolved to believe that there isn't, and can never be, a final version to this collection. FLOH exists in the continuum and will one day return ownerless and silent to its origins in the flea market."—the publisher READ MORE

: Here Is New York Here Is New York
"Here is New York is the most comprehensive and authentic document of what occurred [on September 11th, 2001]. It bears witness to what seemed unimaginable, and it memorializes the people who perished and the rescue workers who served so courageously. Most of all, the book is a testimony of people speaking directly to each other about their fears, their emotions, and their desire for community. This desire is one of the strongest by-products of the horrible events of September 11th. It is also what distinguishes Here is New York from any and all other books about the event."—the publisher READ MORE
