"Transformations of Czech visual culture of the interwar period are often connected with activities of Jaromir Funke, Josef Sudek and Ladislav Sutnar. Of no less importance was their generational peer, co-worker and friend Josef Ehm (1909-1989). In the years 1934-1946 he was a teacher at the State School of Graphic Art in Prague, where in 1935 he participated in preparation of the legendary book Photography Sees Surface. His artistic production is renowned for a unique combination of avant-garde creative methods and technical brilliance."—Galerie Josefa Sudka

Thomas Demand: Catalogue Serpentine Gallery London Thomas Demand: Catalogue Serpentine Gallery London
"Thomas Demand is one of the most celebrated contemporary photo artists. At first sight, Demand's pictures, say of a kitchen, an elevator, or a car park, seem like depictions of everyday places. Yet on closer inspection they turn out to be reconstructions of reality: Demand creates life-size environments made of paper and cardboard and accurate down to the smallest details, photographs these 're-creations' and then destroys them. The pictures that arise in this way put their finger squarely on the drab aesthetics of the modern office world and architecture."—the publisher READ MORE

Wendy Ewald: Towards a Promised Land Wendy Ewald: Towards a Promised Land
"For more than 30 years, Wendy Ewald has put cameras in the hands of children all over the world, and helped them record their dreams and realities in images and words. Towards a Promised Land documents her work with 22 children new to the British seaside town of Margate. Some arrived fleeing countries afflicted by war, poverty or political strife, others by following their families from one town to the next. Over 18 months, Ewald photographed her subject-artists and interviewed them about their past and present lives, while teaching them how to make their own photographs. The resulting case studies capture the children at critical turning points in their lives."—the publisher READ MORE

David Levinthal: Baseball David Levinthal: Baseball
"Quite possibly the most accessible of all his series, David Levinthal's Baseball is remarkable for its straightforward celebration of America's most beloved sport. With both antique and recently manufactured figurines, the artist has recreated some of the legendary moments that color baseball's history. Baseball affords a colorful view of the best and the boldest athletes to have ever played the sport. It is a book that will thrill enthusiasts of baseball and photography alike. The book promises to be among Levinthal's very best in a career that is nothing short of stellar."—the publisher READ MORE

Robert Heinecken: Recto / Verso Robert Heinecken: Recto / Verso
"Recto/Verso is the latest attempt to grasp the magnitude of the monumental archive of photograms that Robert Heinecken created during the past 40 years. In this current sampling, comprised of work from his own archive, Heinecken offers a look back at the decade of the 1980s, where decadence and narcissism inhabit the same space as spirituality and family values."—the publisher READ MORE

The mystique of Diane Arbus continues to seduce photographers, and in the last year the general public has shown renewed interest as well, sparked by two traveling exhibitions and the recent Hollywood movie loosely based on an unauthorized biography by Patricia Bosworth, Diane Arbus. The catalogue for the exhibition originating at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Revelations, is the product of a year's worth of Thursdays and 7000 rolls of film scoured by book designer Yolanda Cuomo and Doon Arbus. Revelations, as the title suggests, presents some unseen photos as well as a time line of Arbus' life. As part of this show, the voyeuristic bibliophile was privileged to have a peek at her personal libraries, culminating in the publication Diane Arbus: The Libraries. Another title, Family Albums, published by Yale, includes contact sheet after contact sheet of editorial work and familiar portraits taken during her professional career. Much like the new Annie Leibovitz book, A Photographer's Life, Family Albums reveals that the line between personal and professional work is often blurry and indistinct. Finally, shortly before her suicide, one of Arbus' students recorded several of her lectures. These words, although re-recorded in the voice of a close friend, can be heard in the DVD Diane Arbus: Masters of Photography.
