Robb Kendrick: Exhibition and FREE lecture with Book signing
photo-eye Bookstore is pleased to co-host two events with cowboy tintype photographer Robb Kendrick: An exhibition and FREE lecture with book-signing
An exhibition of palladium prints from the Tiny Satellite limited edition Twenty-First Century Cowboys, will be on display at the photo-eye Bookstore from Friday, September 12th through Saturday, October 19th, 2008. The exhibition opens with a reception tomorrow, Friday, September 12th, at photo-eye Bookstore from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
The FREE lecture and book signing for Kendrick's book Still: Cowboys at the Start of the Twenty-First Century is sponsored in conjunction with the Photography Department/ Marion Center for Photographic Arts at the College of Santa Fe. The lecture will be held at the College of Santa Fe's Marion Center for Photographic Arts on Wednesday, September 17th at 6 pm. Kendrick will be signing copies of Still and his first book Revealing Character at 5:30, as well as after the lecture.
If you are unable to attend, signed copies will be available at photo-eye Bookstore, open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
Kendrick will be in town this week teaching a workshop sponsored by National Geographic and the Santa Fe Workshops. He will also be doing a formal signing of his Tiny Satellite Press limited edition on Saturday, September 20th from 3pm to 6pm at Schenck Southwest, 268 Los Pinos Road. Schenck Southwest will also be hosting a Ranch sorting and team penning on Sunday, September 21st, 2008. Call 505.438.8350 for more information.

photo-eye Gallery is excited
to announce an exhibition of photographs by Jock Sturges. Sturges will
be present for the opening reception and booksigning to celebrate the
release of his new monographs, Misty Dawn: Portrait of a Muse, published
by Aperture and Life
Time, published by Steidl.
The reception and signing will be held at our Santa Fe Gallery
located at 376 Garcia Street. The exhibition continues through November, 1,
2008.

Gallery artists in group exhibition, Cautionary Tales : A Visual Dystopia.
Santa Fe Gallery artist Laurie Tumer and Photographer's Showcase artist David Ondrik will be exhibiting works in the group exhibition Cautionary Tales : A Visual Dystopia this Saturday, September 6, 2008, 6-8PM at 516Arts in Albuquerque, The gallery is located at 516 Central Avenue SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
In an epoch in which our global community seems to be rapidly disintegrating politically, economically and most alarmingly, environmentally, this exhibit will present work by artists whose images reflect a world going/gone awry. This is a place where much is not well through misuse/abuse of the environment, where because of the failure of society as a whole to properly take care of itself and the world it exists in, we may actually be near the end of the world as we have always known it. These artists have a common theme of alarm and dismay, while at the same time finding haunting beauty and powerful personal expression in their words of caution to us all. Featured artists include Roger Ballen, Jeff Gibson, Robert Hirsch, Rhiannon Mercer, Lori Nix, David Ondrik, Robert Sullkin, Emily Trovillion, Laurie Tumer, Erika Wanenmacher, William Wilson and Cathy Wysocki. Katy Grannan has always been drawn to "lost souls" as subjects. In her earlier work, she allowed her subjects to find her through indirect means such as classified ads and word-of-mouth ( Model Americans, Aperture 2005). With The Westerns, Grannan has taken the initiative and sought out the desired individuals, approaching people in public that spark her interest. A wildly scarce Czech title that will thrill those who may already know the only slightly more common book Na jehlach techto dni [On the Needle of These Days] by Jindrich Heisler and Jindrich Strysky. As Parr and Badger describe, it is an "urban meditation that uses photographic fragments, glimpses of the urban streetscape, to make a wider point about our political situation in the late twentieth century...The book's title may or may not be intentionally ironic. The dark, fragmented nature of the pictures indicate that it is, suggesting an anti-Communist critique made just prior to the 'Prague Spring...Peterka details a familiar iconography of photographic melancholia—abstracted signs, mysterious doorways, peeling and crumbling walls, miserable looking people on the streets, a broken mask lying by a lamp-post. With these apparent cliches, he creates an atmosphere of gloom and uncertainty, mirroring the alienated lives of modern man." |
