Dave Jordano's portfolio Chanute AFB
"In September 1993, the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois was shut down and abandoned. These photographs are from within the base's headquarters building, which, when built, was the largest single military building in the United States before the Pentagon was constructed. Potentially, this building could have been put back into civilian use, but after the base closed, Rantoul's economy declined severely which left the building doomed to fate. For the past fourteen years it has been left to lay waste to the elements. Riddled with black mold, lead paint and asbestos, the building has fallen so far into disrepair that it has all the markings of an environmental hazard. After having been auctioned off by the city, it is currently privately owned, it's future uncertain."—Dave Jordano

|
|
 ©Lisa Robinson
|
This weeks staff pick of Lisa Robinson's At Rest was chosen by Daniel Espeset, Managing Editor of photo-eye Magazine.
"While it is common to see photographs of winter, it is quite rare to see a photograph so thoroughly about winter as Lisa M. Robinson's "At Rest." In fact, it is rare to see contemporary photography concerned with 'season' as its subject, meditating on the basic nature of seasonal change without zealously pointing at impending environmental disaster. It's a difficult task — one that Robinson is successful in for one basic reason: she understands that a season is only defined by its opposite — that the ultimate symbol of winter is a symbol of summer, covered in snow."—Daniel Espeset

Deformerreviewed by Aaron Rothman
I first came to know of Ed Templeton sometime around 1990, when he began appearing in national skateboarding magazines as an up and coming young pro. Like Templeton, I was a teenager who had immersed myself in skateboarding and photography as means of self-expression, discovery, and escape from the trials of suburban American adolescence... read the whole review

Clark Worswick: Sheying
"The Quing Dynasty,
was the last ruling dynasty of China.
Before the collapse of the empire
ended 2,000 years of Imperialism
and ushered in a time of political
and economic strife, artists
turned out rich paintings,
porcelain plates, vases and photographs—
the last having arrived in
the country in the 1840's. This publication
presents a key selection of
photographs of the Southern
Chinese coast taken by both
Chinese and European photographers.

Mikhael Subotzky: Beaufort West
"At the half-way point along South Africa's great highway lies the small town of Beaufort West. With its prison in the middle of town, on an island
in the highway, it's a surreal road-stop that offers everything a traveller might want — food, gas, a place
to stay, an hour of sex... Mikhael Subotzky considers the town, its vivid characters and poignant social
landscapes, in a photo essay that confronts central issues of contemporary South African society."—the publisher READ MORE

James Mollison: The Disciples
"Between 2004 and 2007, James Mollison attended pop concerts across Europe and the USA with a
mobile photography studio, inviting fans of each music star or band to pose for their portrait outside the
gig. He subsequently combined portraits of 8-10 fans for each performer into a single line up, making a
single panoramic image in each case. With a total over 500 individual portraits, in 58 panoramic

Nobuyoshi Araki: Araki Meets Hokusai
Copies arriving in about 1 to 2 weeks.
"Approximately one hundred current photographs, never exhibited before, from Araki's notorious Bondage series are presented together with small-format woodcuts. Upon closer inspection, the woodcuts reveal only slightly concealed allusions to erotic desire and sexuality. It is not only where sexual activities may be seen that Araki's spiritual affinity with his artistic ancestors becomes clear."—the publisher READ MORE
