This weeks staff pick, "Alec, 2006" was chosen by Gallery Associate Director Heather Prichard.
"On an intimate level the photographs in The Garden are intended to be an expression of the wonder encountered by each of us as we explore the complexities of the contemporary natural experience.
For many years my concerns as an artist have centered on the relationship between nature and culture. With the birth of our twins Ethan and Lily in 2002, the lives of my children have occupied a growing portion of my creative activity. The quiet instances of discovery and revelation I observe as they each attempt to define their own individual relationship with the natural world are the moments I value most as both an artist and father. Using the metaphor of the garden to represent both nature and creation, I hope to explore the notion that we are all simultaneously part of, and separate from, this process." -Todd Stewart

Ken Schles: A New History of Photography: The World Outside and the Pictures in our Heads
from George Slade
How often are you compelled to quote a photographer's printed writings? I have two favored references: the first, chronologically and in number of conscious appearances, is Robert Frank's pithy and enduring comment that "it is always the instantaneous reaction to oneself that produces a photograph" (from "A Statement..." published in U.S. Camera Annual 1958, p. 115); the second, Charles Harbutt's summation that "In some ways, all photographers must become cavemen. Or aliens. Or childr...

| David Goldblatt: Particulars (SIGNED) Goldblatt won the 2003 book award at the Arles photography festival for Particulars. The son of a tailor, Goldblatt was born and raised in the years just preceding Apartheid-era South Africa, in the insignificant town of Randfontein...While his work fits readily into a classic documentary genre, he has avoided the tendency of many who have sought to dramatize moments in the lives of strangers.

Robert Frank: Looking In
"First released in 1958, Robert Frank's seminal work, The Americans, is without
question the single most important photographer's book published since
World War II. This catalogue and the traveling exhibition it
accompanies mark the fiftieth anniversary of the book's publication. Looking In:
Robert Frank's "The Americans" provides a fascinating, in—depth examination of
the making of the photographs for the book and its actual construction, using
vintage contact sheets and work prints that literally chart Frank's journey
around the country on a Guggenheim grant in 1955—56."—the publisher READ MORE

V.D.: Beyond History
Copies arriving in 2 to 4 weeks.
"Media coverage and stereotypical discussions about places around the world have a major effect on people's perception of the others and their existence. Modern myths are being created all the time. This is hardly more the case when people, generally trapped in history and ideology, talk about Cuba and its political, economical and cultural landscape. V.D. fell in love with Cuba in 1997 and has visited the country six times since then. He befriended an Afro—Cuban family, explored the space, the people, the streets, the pictures from the past, the impossible relations..."—the publisher READ MORE

In Almost Every Picture # 7: Shooting Gallery
Copies arriving in 2 to 4 weeks.
"This chronological collection begins in 1936, when a 16 year old Dutch girl picks up a gun and shoots at the target in a fairground shooting gallery. Every time she hits the target, it triggers the shutter of a camera, and a portrait of a girl in firing pose is taken and given as a prize. This series documents almost every year of the woman's life up until present times, where at the age of 88 the woman still makes her pilgrimage to the Shooting Gallery."—the publisher READ MORE
