Kyle Ford's portfolio Second Nature
"Focusing on how we construct and manipulate nature to create aesthetically fluent views, this work confronts contemporary conventions of nature and reality. Our visually driven society has wired us with a core set of expectations when interacting with nature. These expectations have in turn created an aesthetic language from which we build our ideas of what nature is. Concerning oak trees, amusement parks, roadside turnoffs, and orca whales, Second Nature examines an American visual consciousness, from the regular to the ridiculous."—Kyle Ford

photo-eye Gallery Staff Pick
|
|
 ©Hiroyasu Matsui
|
This weeks staff pick, cube #5 by Hiroyasu Matsui, was chosen by our online gallery coordinator Sarah Bradley.
"'What exactly is a photograph?' — In choosing film as my medium for artistic expression I thought I must first understand and assess its essence and characteristics. At the same time I wanted to avoid perceiving my subjects through conventional values and interpretations, which is why I needed to create a suprematistic image." — Hiroyasu Matsui

| Joseph Szabo: Teenage (SIGNED) "Photographer Joseph Szabo's subject is adolescence...Taken in the 70s and 80s, the photographs in Teenage represent a remarkable evocation of that period, and yet there is something timeless and endlessly compelling about Szabo's portrait of almost-adulthood...Teenage is a poignant record of Szabo's work spanning two decades, a timeless evocation of almost-adulthood."—the publisher

Henrik Vering: Berlin—Signed
Pre-order a signed copy!
"Not a tourist tale but rather a raw and grainy, black and white portrait, in which photographer Henrik Vering's project takes the viewer to the heart of the city of Berlin. Like a shadow he shows us his deep fascination of the city that found rapid change from the nineties onwards, and which was then, as now, still struggling with its identity."—the publisher READ MORE

Chris Killip: Here Comes Everybody—Signed
Limited signed copies arriving in 2-4 weeks.
"Here Comes Everybody is a phrase that echoes repeatedly in James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake, and as such it aptly captures the intense poetry of this new collection of photographs taken over repeated trips to Ireland between 1993 and 2005. On each visit Killip attended the annual pilgrimages at Croagh Patrick and Maamen in the West of Ireland, places of wild beauty and ancient spirituality. His poignant photographs of the pilgrims' trek are complemented by landscapes, townscapes, and details photographed in the West of Ireland and beyond..."—the publisher READ MORE

"The legendary Cava di Gioia quarry in Carrara, Italy, was the source of the luminous white marble used by Michelangelo, Bernini, Henry Moore, and other renowned sculptors. Carrara, a volume of stunning photographs by William Wylie, reveals that the beauty of the quarry itself can be as alluring as the sculptures carved from its stone."—the publisher READ MORE

Espen R. Krukhaug: Before Dawn—Signed
Signed copies arriving in 2-4 weeks.
"'I have always had a natural attraction towards the quiet moments of night time. These neglected moments hold so much beauty that people take for granted during daytime. Everyday life contains a well known stress—factor that brings us from a to b. But nocturnal shades throw a different light. With so much light—pollution in the cities, it will never be fully dark. But still, these colors and shades are sources for incredible colors in my work.'—Espen Krukhaug
The images are taken in China, England, Norway, Russia, Scotland and USA."—the publisher READ MORE
