Mark Menjivar's portfolio You Are What You Eat
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT is a series of portraits made by examining the interiors of refrigerators in homes across the Untied States.

"For three years I have traveled around the country examining the issue of hunger. The more time I spent speaking and listening to individual stories, the more I began to think about the foods we consume and the affects they have on us as individuals and communities. An intense curiosity and questions about stewardship led me to begin to make these unconventional portraits. A refrigerator is both a private and a shared space. One person likened the question, 'May I photograph the interior of your fridge?' to asking someone to pose nude for the camera. Each fridge is photographed 'as is'. Nothing added, nothing taken away."—Mark Menjivar

This weeks staff pick "The Whale Shark Tank" by Kyle Ford was chosen by gallery associate director, Heather Prichard.

"Focusing on how we construct and manipulate nature to create aesthetically fluent views, this work confronts contemporary conventions of nature and reality. Our visually driven society has wired us with a core set of expectations when interacting with nature. These expectations have in turn created an aesthetic language from which we build our ideas of what nature is."— Kyle Ford

 Auctions
Shinzo Fukuhara's very scarce third book, most copies of which were lost in the 1923 earthquake in Tokyo. A hugely important book in that it presents a rebuke to the technique of heavily worked pigment prints that was then prevalent among photographic artists in Japan. He advocates an entirely more Modernist approach in its place: one in which the the inherent qualities of photographs themselves are foregrounded—namely, its ability to reproduce gradations of light and dark.
Bids shown below are current as of 9:19 pm MT, 04.22.2009

Barbara Crane: Private Views Barbara Crane: Private Views
"In the early 1980s, Barbara Crane embarked on a series of photographs shot during Chicago's various summer festivals. Using a Super Speed Graphic camera and Polaroid film, Crane waded in close to the revelers, tracking down the details of their clothing, hairstyles and gestures. The images are tightly cropped and condensed and therefore terrifically alive, bringing us viscerally into the crush of people eating, drinking and enjoying the crowd dynamic.

"'Now, half a century and more after these tombstones were erected, the chipped and cracked porcelain shows us a final truth. The innocent provincial charm of the photographs seems to have been a camouflage. We see ghosts rather than the effigy of people once alive, the scratched out eyes of the farmers, faceless soldiers, perforated children, the smashed in heads of Jewish teachers, the tortured beauty of women....'—Zbigniew Kosc"—the publisher READ MORE
