Kyohei Abe's portfolio Imaginary scape
In my process of image making, I am interested in revealing the interrelationship between the physical world and the world of imagination. I draw ideas from subjectivity, perception, and philosophy and I attempt to represent them with a sense of wit and humor.
All my images are the result of combining physical construction and digital technology. My physical interaction with objects and space is very important process of my image making, where I transform imagery into ideas.

photo-eye Gallery Staff Pick
|
|
 ©Elaine Mayes
|
Greg Cartelli, our Summer Gallery intern from Bard College, has chosen Christmas Eve Pegasus, N.Y. Thruway, 1972 by Elaine Mayes as this week's staff pick.
"I have been working with photographic mediums as art forms for forty years. My experience with these mediums leads me to feel they have symbolic, linguistic and historic functions, with creative and aesthetic potentials. Primarily my work has been in straight photography and in "finding" images in the world. Most of my efforts have been focused on shooting images spontaneously and using the camera to record aspects of seeing. I also have been interested in documentary forms and in extending notions of what is considered a 'documentary' approach. Living in mass culture and a world of mediated experiences leads me to believe that basic visual perception (seeing) and direct interaction with the physical world are crucial modes for awareness and human survival as well as for meaningful art endeavors."— Elaine Mayes

| Guy Bourdin: Sighs and Whispers (1976 Bloomingdale's Catalogue) "With keen economy of means, and no digital effects, [Bourdin's] images make much contemporary photography feel tired by comparison. That he worked in the context of the fashion magazine and advertising is only another lesson in art's and photography's elsewhere."—Bruce Hainley, Artforum, December, 2001 READ MORE |

Nicholas Gottlund: Wild Prayer—Signed
More signed copies arriving in 1-2 weeks.
"An aggregate of images from my ongoing White series. The origins of the series were to investigate the bleaching effects of light over time. Wild Prayer uses this effect to relate to the experience of visual distortion and what happens to the senses when one rapidly accelerates or loses consciousness. Such a 'whiteout' effect is also used as a device to communicate the memory of a past event or place."—Nicholas Gottlund READ MORE

Stuart O'Sullivan: A Shared History
"Family History,
which takes as its theme the history of his(Stuart O'Sullivan) wife Dionicia's family.
Her late grandfather's family were Quakers who migrated
to this country in the 1700s. They were among the founding
members of the state of Pennsylvania, and their history is long
and detailed. His family home, in which grandmother still lives,
is a fortress containing much of this history, and a ripe subject for
O'Sullivan's uncanny ability to bring us all home again."—the publisher READ MORE

Sasha Bezzubov: Wildfire
More copies arriving in 1-2 weeks.
"In the American west during the last 35 years, the number of
fires increased by a factor of four; the average fire went from
lasting a week to lasting five; the total area burned increased by
six and a half times; and the average fire season increased by
78 days. All of which is to say, as Bill McKibben points out in
his introduction to Wildfire, we really shouldn't be calling them
wildfires any more. Sasha Bezzubov has gained wide recognition
for his photographs of natural disasters in his ongoing project
'Things Fall Apart.'"—the publisher READ MORE

Man Ray: Trees & Flowers-insects & Animals
"Locked away in enormous bank vaults and largely removed from public scrutiny for more than a decade, the collection of the little—known Man Ray Trust is comprised of more than 4,000 works by the great photographer and artist. Man Ray: Trees & Flowers—Insects & Animals is an archival project that draws extensively on this collection. The title of the series was found scrawled across the back of a photograph, and it conveys the indexical nature of this most unusual archive."?the publisher READ MORE

Environmental Portraiture
with Jonathan Torgovnik
August 2-8, 2009
The unspoken language and emotional connections between photographer, subject, and environment are the focus of this workshop. We navigate through the intimate and, at times, intense process of creating a successful portrait with an emphasis on photographing people in their personal environments, in and around their homes or workplaces. In addition, we discuss the use of multiple camera formats including large, medium, and 35mm.

The Intimate Scenic and the Digital Edge
with Tony Sweet
August 2-8, 2009
This workshop is an exciting blend of creative outdoor photography, hands—on technical instruction in the latest digital tools, and daily critiques. We spend the week seeking out small, interesting scenes to interpret photographically, while incorporating compositional techniques to simplify and isolate the subject. We take advantage of digital optimization tools, from raw processing to software and plug-in intervention, to create the image we see in our imagination.

The Southwestern Landscape
with David Michael Kennedy
August 2-8, 2009
David's approach to landscape photography focuses on the photographer's relationship to the land. Through long but enjoyable hours exploring and photographing the New Mexico landscape and the spirit that lives within it, participants arrive at their own personal discovery and visual interpretation of Mother Earth. On daily field trips down back roads, we search for the elusive magic that lies beyond the obvious.
