Jamey Stillings portfolio The Bridge at Hoover Dam

"I first encountered the construction site of the Colorado River Bridge, downstream from Hoover Dam, in March 2009, and it immediately captured my imagination... This engineering feat, on par with any current national or international project, requires the creation of a 1060 foot twin-rib tubular concrete arch springing simultaneously from both the Arizona and Nevada sides of the Black Canyon toward a rendezvous 850 feet over the Colorado River."—Jamey Stillings

 In My Library
Nothing like eating a sandwich and looking at art.

Paper Placemats was originally conceived as a public works project. Some of the books were donated to restaurants and diners around the US so that others could have the same pleasure that I have when I pull this book from my library. (Please note that this photo is staged. NEVER eat food while looking at photobooks!)

Paper Placemats includes work by Michael Northrup, Ed Panar, Lars Tunbjork and many others. J&L Books still have a few left, and like some of the items on the diner menus, they are cheap. Add it to your library today.

This week's In My Library selection was by Book Division Manager, Melanie McWhorter. Check next week's newsletter for a selection from the library of photo-eye Shipping Manager Daniel Fuller.

 365 A Book A Day

This week's 365 Book A Day featured items are:

Studio with photographs by Paolo Roversi.
"Studio. features nearly two decades of Paolo Roversi's hugely influential studio portraiture. Within the confines of his Paris studio, Roversi photographs using a 8 x 10 Polaroid format, often allowing the images to fade before fixing them to their substrate. His long exposures at close range harness an aesthetic from the earliest days of studio photography, but with a renewed urgency that wavers somewhere between history and apparition."

Regarding Heroes with photographs by Yousuf Karsh.
"Yousuf Karsh's life-long ambition was to search for a form within a face, one that could become a symbol for a life that was purposeful, meaningful, and generally virtuous. 'I speak with some experience when I say that I have rarely left the company of accomplished men and women without feeling that they had in them real sincerity, integrity - yes, and sometimes vanity of course - and always a sense of high purpose.'"

Color Dying Light with photographs by Sam Falls.
"Last time I spoke with him, he said he wanted more abstraction. He said, "Show me anything I've never seen before." Some might take this to betray a certain cynicism or discontent with the world as it is. I would disagree. Sam's work is more hyper-real than surreal."—Joshua Willey

El Baño de Frida Kahlo with photographs by Graciela Iturbide.
"In 2005, the bathroom of Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo's private home, was reopened for the first time since her death 51 years ago. On this occasion Graciela Iturbide embarked on a voyage of discovery of the Mexican artist's private life, documenting the fundamental "witnesses" of her human and artistic career during this week-long "journey": medical supplies, artificial limbs, corsets, hospital gowns and stuffed animals, a portrait of Stalin and her hot-water bottle."

Ocean with photographs by Martin Bogren.
"For those that don't live within reach of the sea, the experience of visiting it can be tremendous. Martin Bogren's compact collection of black and white photographs, captures the joy and playfulness surrounding a group of Indians first visit to the Indian Ocean after they traveled more than 1000 miles by bus from the province of Rajasthan, India."

Jet Airliner with photographs by Josef Hoflehner.
"Fasten seatbelt and prepare for landing. This new book features Josef Hoflehner's outstanding photographic series 'Jet Airliner'. These photographs are real, live-action, wide-angle captures of arriving and departing airplanes at the Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies. Perfectly printed in dutone - the book is bound in shiny white silk."

Shoot edited by Ken Miller with contributions from Stephen Shore and Penny Martin.
"Shoot: Photography of the Moment presents the work of twenty-six photographers whose work focuses on capturing a moment rather than elaborate lighting setups or controlled, manufactured scenarios. Employing the most basic photographic tools-a single-lens reflex camera and natural light-they must rely on their instincts and their ability to interact with a situation to create a dynamic image."
