photo-eye Magazine Reviews
|
|
 © Bruce Connew
|
This week in photo-eye Magazine:
IN THE REVIEWS:
"Bette Gordon's famous, perhaps infamous, 1983 independent film Variety evolved from an earlier series of cinematic narrative photographs created by Nan Goldin. While a few of the photographs from Goldin's Variety were incorporated in her earlier opus, The Ballard of Sexual Dependency, this is the first cohesive publication of the entire Variety project. " — from Douglas Stockdale's review of Nan Goldin's Variety
"Bruce Connew's limited edition of On the Way to an Ambush is a clever bit of packaging. Originally published by Victoria University Press in 1999, Connew is offering what his website calls the "last 100-copy limited edition, multi-media" version of the book." — from Sara Terry's review of Bruce Connew's On the Way to an Ambush

In My Library
|
|
|
This week's In My Library selection is by Bookstore Associate, Tony Dolezal. Tony selected American Power with photographs by Mitch Epstein.
"Mitch Epstein's latest project tackles one of the most loaded issues on the nation's agenda: what and who powers America? Between 2003 and 2008, prompted by the evacuation of an environmentally contaminated Ohio town, Epstein traveled the United States to document the country's energy "hot spots," where fossil fuel, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind and solar power are produced, encountering further contaminations, Homeland Security obstacles, corporate invincibility and the occasional token of hope." — the publisher

Ordinary Lives by Rania Matar.
"Lebanon is a country built on dichotomies. It is a blend of cultures, poised at the intersection between the Western and Arab worlds. Born in Beirut and living in the West, photographer Rania Matar is especially attuned to those dichotomies."
Sensation by Noriko Takazawa.
"Black and white offset printed, saddle-stitched zine of Noriko Takazawa's work."
Even Your Ears by Kim Hyunjin.
"Black and white offset printed, saddle-stitched zine of Kim Hyunjin's work."
Paris Naked by Veronique Vial.
"In the footsteps of George Brassaï and with a beautiful model on her side, French photographer Véronique Vial leads us through Paris at night."
Café Lehmitz by Anders Petersen.
"Cafe Lehmitz, a beer joint at the Reeperbahn, was a meeting point for many who worked in Hamburg's red-light district: prostitutes, pimps, transvestites, workers, and petty criminals."
Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens by Thomas Struth.
"The book describes how Darwin struggled to get the pictures he needed, scouring the galleries, bookshops, and photographic studios of London, looking for pictures to satisfy his demand for expressive imagery. He finally settled on one the giants of photographic history, the eccentric art photographer Oscar Rejlander, to make his pictures."
Archive by Melvin Sokolsky.
"Melvin Sokolsky's photographs are deeply imaginative and challenge the aesthetic conventions of the advertising and editorial worlds. Reflecting the artist's fascination of Surrealist Art, Sokolsky's photographs explore and play with spatial relationships, scale, proportion, visual rationality, and the laws of physics."
