This week in photo-eye Magazine:

IN THE REVIEWS:
Some books prompt laughter or provoke anger. Some are thinly disguised exercises in self-aggrandizement or false humility. Some books are bent on little more than titillation, preaching to the converted, or celebrity worship. And some books transcend all of this and make you stop in your tracks. What's startling about Elizabeth Heyert's work in this volume is that, after it seizes hold of you, it forces you to recognize that the shortcomings ascribed to books are also evident in the human faces and forms we encounter every day; every one of us contains a volume, though reading it is not always pleasurable." —from George Slades's review of Elizabeth Heyert's The Narcissists

IN THE REVIEWS:
In the spirit of his oeuvre, Roe Ethridge's Farewell Horse is at first encounter both seductive and elusive. The book itself, bound in natural cloth with a tipped-in photograph on the cover, is structured in three distinct and seemingly unrelated parts—the central one being black-and-white photographs of wild horses. These horses, I researched and discovered, were at one time domesticated but later abandoned on Cumberland Island off of Georgia's coast. Outtakes from a magazine shoot (from which many of Ethridge's fine-art images derive), the feral animals are pictured intimately against palm trees, vinyl siding and on the beach. The photographs immediately imply a situation fraught with solitude yet occasionally reveal moments of glory. " —from Shane Lavalette's review of Roe Ethridge's Farewell Horse

Anders Petersen & JH Engström: From Back Home Anders Petersen & JH Engström: From Back Home
"From Back Home provides a beautiful and often haunting glimpse into the native region of two of Sweden's most well-known photographers. Both Anders Petersen and his former assistant JH Engström navigated freely through Sweden's Värmland region, allowing for a stylistic portrayal of a landscape and people unique among any other book recently published. Petersen's high-contrast black and white images mesh almost seamlessly with Engström's washed out color palate, allowing for a diary of images that leave the viewer wondering if these photographs are a depiction of reality or a surreal dimension created by two highly intelligent photographers." — Antone Dolezal (photo-eye Books)

From Back Home has been a highly sought-after book and will soon be out-of-print. photo-eye currently has a limited number of copies available. READ MORE
