"The small corner of northeastern Louisiana is too far north of New Orleans to be of much interest to anyone who doesn't live here. It is a place that nurtured me through childhood, confined me as a young adult and called me home every time I moved away. It is a place where I have lived most of my life but that I have never fully understood. And it is that misunderstanding that continues to inspire me to explore what is so familiar on the surface and such a mystery underneath."— Jenny Ellerbe

First Wednesday Photography Salon on March 3, 2010
Artists presenting: College of Santa Fe Students Micaela Butts, Matthew Morrow, Bobby-David Mitchell, Jared Pitts and Cliff Shapiro

First Wednesday's March Salon will be held on March 3rd, 2010, with the opening reception starting at 6:30pm and the salon running from 6:45pm to 9pm. This month's Salon will be guest hosted by Fraction's David Bram and will feature presentations by a few of the College of Santa Fe's Fine Art Photography Program students: Micaela Butts, Matthew Morrow, Bobby-David Mitchell, Jared Pitts and Cliff Shapiro. The program for the evening will begin with each student making brief presentation of his or her work and finish with an open portfolio presentation where the audience can walk around, view the work of each student and interact with the photographers individually. We hope this evening will help introduce the students of CSF and their program to a larger audience and allow those students the opportunity to speak about their work outside of the campus.

 photo-eye Magazine Reviews

This week in photo-eye Magazine:

Rewind the Photographs is the latest in Nina Korhonen's photographic voyage of self-discovery. Korhonen's previous book, the excellent 'Anna,' used bold color and dry humor to portray the life of Korhonen's grandmother after she migrated to the USA from Finland.

There is little such color in Rewind the Photographs and the humor is much lower key. Instead Korhonen uses her own relationships to show the world she inhabits, a world that revolves around family and friends." —from Colin Pantall's review of Nina Korhonen's Rewind

Passion, drive and mud fill the pages of Jake Mendel's book Short Track, published by powerHouse Books. In the 77 black and white photographs determination and the ghost of Dale Earnhardt show their faces. This is not a surprise, but gives credence to the authenticity of the fans, drivers and wrench turners pictured. Racing is their life, not a recreation." —from Tom Leininger's review of Jake Mendel's Short Track
