Walker Evans: Havana 1933 (with 10 Prints!!) Walker Evans: Havana 1933 (with 10 Prints!!)
A wonderful collection of later prints from Evans' 1933 trip to Cuba that includes two of his most famous images, "Man in White Suit" (shown here) and "The Cobbler". Curator Judith Keller observed that Evans' Cuba pictures seem influenced by Diego Rivera's politicized content, Hemingway's "stripped down, minimal style" (Evans spent time with Hemingway during his stay on the island) and the "characteristic emptiness" of Eugene Atget." SEE THEM ALL HERE

We're continuing to list selections from a major collection that features key titles by a wide variety of artists including Irving Penn, JH Engstm, Esko Mnnikk, Alex Webb, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Thomas Struth, Eggleston, Weber, and many others. Be sure to check back often!

This week's reviews: Sbastien Girard's Nothing But Home & Gary Ciadella's The Calumet Region

"Photographs of stained ceilings, dirty surfaces, broken light bulbs, peeling paint, slabs of wood, sawdust, wet concrete, old books, dark holes and the occasional presence of protruding nature at first seem revolting in the cruel light of the camera's flash. The images are claustrophobic, chaotic and clinical, yet they maintain an attention to details and imperfections that eventually shows them as laborious, loving — the way in which the act of repair is."— from Shane Lavalette's review of Sbastien Girard's Nothing But Home
 Gary Ciadella
 Gary Ciadella
"Ciadella brings his own poetic stillness to these empty places, which remind me of my experiences there. The book is the view of a local. The pictures are direct and sturdy — there is not another way to face the Region than head on. The landscape challenges the photographer to find beauty and Ciadella's point of view has been shaped by this place." —from Tom Leininger's review of Gary Ciadella's The Calumet Region

John Gossage: Here John Gossage: Here—Signed
"Upon developing particular rolls of film used in Rochester, Gossage discovered that a technical problem created compelling transformations of several images. A "light leak" developed in the bellows of one of his cameras, which allowed light to enter into the camera and to partially expose the film within. The consequence of this exposure is ghostly illuminated areas that obscure portions of the images....

In the subsequent spaces, more formal and characteristic work begins. The homes, yards, and street scenes presented within Gossage's photographs are commonplace enough that most would have passed by the same location without pausing for a moment of contemplation. As in his previous projects, Gossage makes known the disregarded and seemingly insignificant elements of our environment."— from the exhibition description, Rochester Art Center
