Lecture & Booksigning: Mike Mandel & Chantal Zakari's The State of Ata
photo-eye is pleased to host a lecture and booksigning for Mike Mandel and Chantal Zakari and their book The State of Ata: The Contested Imagery of Power in Turkey on October 5th, 2010 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at photo-eye Gallery, 376-A Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM.
In The State of Ata artists Mike Mandel and Chantal Zakari examine the contemporary imagery of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkey's revolutionary leader after World War I. From 1923 until his death in 1938, by the sheer force of his personality and his command of the military, he fashioned Turkish culture through the prism of his vision for a secular state.

Ernie Button's portfolio Vanishing Spirits: The Dried Remains of Single Malt Scotch
"These images are created with the small amount of single malt Scotch left in a glass after most of it has been consumed. The alcohol dries and leaves the sediment in various patterns. It is a little bit like snowflakes in that every time the Scotch dries, the glass yields different patterns and results. I have taken different color lights and gels to add 'life' to the bottom of the glass, creating the illusion of landscape. Eventually, I will conduct experiments with other spirits to see if they yield similar results."—Ernie Button

| Ihei Kimura: Pari (Paris)
Though it was published in 1974, the year Kimura died, the photos in this stunning book date from before 1960. "Paris is notable for two things," write Parr and Badger. "Firstly, it as a distinctive colour palette, composed of cool blues, greys, browns, and purples. Secondly, there is Kimura's view of the city itself, which teeters between conventional travel photography and something much more original...READ MORE |

photo-eye Book Reviews

|
 from the book Unintended Sculptures
|
"Henrik Saxgren's recent photobook Unintended Sculptures offers wonderful reminders that in the rush of my daily life I need to occasionally take time to pause and just observe. Saxgren shares with us that located amongst the various and assorted debris of our day to day world, there exists, waiting to be discovered, a plethora of readymade art to be contemplated and enjoyed." —From Douglas Stockdale's review of Unintended Sculptures with photographs by Henrik Saxgren

 from the book Shirin Neshat
|
"I really wanted to like Shirin Neshat's handsome new monograph from Rizzoli. It's a well-made, impressive object with terrific image quality. It's got original text by Art World Superstar Marina Abramovic and über-critic Arthur Danto. I was pretty excited when I first got my hands on it. (The pictures are so shiny.)" —From Jonathan Blaustein's review of Shirin Neshat with photographs by Shirin Neshat
