 © Hiroyasu Matsui

Hiroyasu Matsui's portfolio Labyrinth "The underlying theme in much of my work is the visualization of abstract concepts, and as such I frequently seek inspiration in mathematics and mythology. In this work I attempt to convey the movement of human consciousness using a maze-like image while using the question of dimension for the fundamental structure. In creating the image, I drew on Gropius' theories on architecture, the cityscape of Shibam in Yemen, and several Italian fortress cities. But I kept the structure linear and simple, and avoided cultural patterns associated with architecture to make the image more abstract.
This photograph is created purely by the contrast of light and dark on a flat surface, and so the light source and shadows manifest themselves in configurations that would be impossible in a three-dimensional world." — Hiroyasu Matsui

Publisher's Showcase: Punctum Press
Rome-based Punctum Books publishes a diverse number of titles, but also has a distinct focus on Italian related works — whether that be books by Italian photographers like Marco Delogu and Giuliano Matteucci, whose Ecclesia is a quite and powerful monograph looking at the enduring markers of colonization through missionary-erected churches in Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali — or studies of Italy itself, currently offering a group of titles on The Eternal City.

photo-eye Book Reviews

 from the book Emmett
|
Emmett by Ron Jude"What do drag racing funny cars, chopping wood, lens flares, horror movies, mountains and woods, and groovy eighties haircuts have in common? Judging from Ron Jude's photographs and the title he's given this enigmatic compilation, the common denominator must be Emmett. This book, while intimate and diaristic, is also cinematic in scope and emotional suggestiveness." — from the review by George Slade of Ron Jude's Emmett

from the book What Can We Believe Where?
|
What Can We Believe Where? by Robert Adams"Robert Adams is one of the most influential photographers of the 20th Century. He is prolific with both the image and written word. What Can We Believe Where? brings together his best known works of the last 40 years into one book. It is more than just a best of collection. This is Adams on Adams, he selected the images for the book himself from the holdings at Yale University. " — from the review by Tom Leininger of Robert Adams's What Can We Believe Where?

| Walker Evans: Chicago. 1946 (2 prints) ...Evans' deadpan vision of these down at the heals Victorian structures renders them strangely vulnerable. As Lincoln Kirsten wrote in a 1933 catalog essay for a show of Evans' Victorian House project at MoMA, "Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, St. Louis, and Philadelphia all await the tender cruelty of Evans' camera." |
