Aaron Blum's portfolio Born and Raised "Light plays an important role in how I understand this place. The warm southern sun creates a glow that pours over the mountains, rivers and forests creating long shadows, dark recesses and thick fog and mist that blanket the landscape. I am sure that these inherencies of the hills provide a catalyst in the imaginations of those who misconceive Appalachia, but to me this unique quality of light provides a backdrop for the region that becomes both magnificent and eerie. It is its own character within the story of Appalachia." — Aaron Blum

A Closer Look — Allerseelen
"Alexander Binder's new publication Allerseelen (German for the term 'All Souls') is a fantastic object produced by Morel Books. The title refers to those who are cast into purgatory, waiting for their coming redemption. Wandering through dense forests, Binder creates a short series of mythical images reminiscent of what one might expect to see if they suddenly woke up in Middle Earth." — Antone Dolezal

Raising Funds and Awareness through Photobooks: Tent Life by Wyatt Gallery.
"Recently, I have noticed an abundance of documentary photobooks published where once the books are sold, the proceeds are donated to a charity related to the photographic project. Over the next few weeks, I will focus on a few of these titles benefiting charities in locations such as Congo, Russia, United States, Japan and Cambodia among other locations and philanthropic causes such as hospice care, reconstruction after a natural or man-made disaster and the building of and funding for children's hospitals. For the first installment in this series, I am featuring Wyatt Gallery's Tent Life: Haiti." — Melanie McWhorter

photo-eye Book Reviews
|
|
from the book State of the Union
|
State of the Union by Mitch Epstein" State of the Union has the scope and character of a photographic 'Great American Novel' (even if it does not trumpet its status as such) and it's hard to avoid the description 'novelistic' when turning the pages of this handsome, thematically substantial volume. The comparison is somewhat specious, in that authorship here is the business of publisher Hatje Cantz and the Kunstmuseum Bonn - this is, strictly speaking, an exhibition catalogue rather than a monograph - as much as it is of the photographer." — from the review by Faye Robson of State of the Union

from the book The Rape of a Nation
|
The Rape of a Nation by Marcus Bleasdale "The Rape of a Nation Photographs by Marcus Bleasdale. Foreword by John Le Carré Published by Schilt Publishing, 2010.
I've been a fan of Marcus Bleasdale ever since I first heard the story, years ago, of how he became a photographer. With a degree in finance and economics, he'd wound up working in London after college — with some doubts, as I recall, about the moral code of his profession. Things came to a head the day a colleague walked into the office after some particularly horrendous conflict had hit the news and said, 'I wonder how much the price of gold will go up?' as a result of the crisis. That was the breaking point for Bleasdale." — from the review by Sara Terry of The Rape of a Nation

Jim Krantz: Homage—Signed
"In the fall of 2009 and 2010 photographer Jim Krantz traveled to Ukraine, photographing the individuals still living in the shadow of the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor, and the abandoned villages that surround it. While there he discovered a long-forgotten eulogy to the village penned by a fleeing resident, celebrating the former glory of the village, the author's home, and promising to return one day." — the publisher
