Greg Mac Gregor: In Search of Dominguez & Escalante—Signed
"More than two hundred years later Greg Mac Gregor and Siegfried Halus have created a remarkable visual record of the expedition. Using Escalante's journal as their guide, the photographers followed the expeditionary route, circling through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona, and documenting the frontier as first witnessed by the Spanish explorers on horseback. The expedition passed what today are major national parks and landforms: Zion Canyon; Dinosaur Monument; and the Grand Canyon. The photographs show many areas virtually unchanged over centuries; other images reveal the passage of time in pictures of dammed rivers, power lines, and towns where once stood virgin forests." — the publisher

| Fotografie 1928-58 (Czech Portfolio of 20 Prints--Drtikol, Tmej, Funke, Sudek, Honty & Others) Under director Jan Rezac, the State Belles Lettres Music and Art Publishers [SNKLHU] was Czechoslovakia's most prestigious Socialist publishing house during much the 1950s. An unlikely champion of Modernist photography during an otherwise repressive period in Czech history, they put out four of Sudek's books, including Prague Panorama and Fotografie. This collection of prints appeared in 1959, containing work by the most important photographers of the previous thirty years. The folio is itself a gorgeous piece of mid-century Modern design! |

photo-eye Book Reviews

|
 from the book About Love
|
About Love by Gay Block
"'Through photography, I have learned about love.' The words that open this anthology of Gay Block's work, and give it its title, really are the best possible introduction to her warm and sympathetic photographs. Photography as a way, almost an excuse, to connect with others and as, fundamentally, an empathic medium — these are the principles that shape this collection of portraits." — Faye Robson from the review of About Love by Gay Block

Low Life by Scot Sothern
"Chipped paint, fuzzy television screens and naked women. That sums up Scot Sothern's Lowlife, a series of pictures of prostitutes that Sothern visited in the 1980s. Part romantic, part sleazeball, part concerned, the resulting book is hard to place; a cocktail of the John's eye view, searing documentary and lurid but real text. It's a male point of view but with human characteristics, a vital book that, with its multiple perspectives, escapes the clichés of prostitution photography." — Colin Pantall from the review of Lowlife by Scot Sothern

Entrance to American Life Exhibition Hall
|
Lishui International Photography Festival
"My journey to Lishui, China began with an invitation to curate an exhibition at the Lishui International Photography Festival. As in 2009, Yan Li invited ten curators to select two photographers to display at the festival with the theme of American Life. The total number of Americans (mei guó rén in pinyin, one of the very few words in my Mandarin vocabulary) invading the small southwestern city of approximately 2.5 million could be upwards of 40 people. Unable to make the trip in 2009, I was delighted when she extended the invitation once again." — from Melanie McWhorter's post on photo-eye Blog

Keith Carter on Slightly Awkward, Lovely Moments
"Currently on display at photo-eye is a group exhibition which includes a selection of animal photographs by Keith Carter. In his photographs, Carter illuminates the intuitive meanings of images as would a poet. He doesn't seek reality but instead looks, as he says, "around the edges for those little askew moments - kind of like what makes up our lives - those slightly awkward, lovely moments." I have asked Keith to tell us a little more about the little askew moments in his images The Birth of Photography and Horse and Wolf. Enjoy!" — Anne Kelly

Chaco Terada on Her New Work
Currently on display at photo-eye Gallery is a group exhibition that includes a few new images by Chaco Terada. We met Terada a few years ago. At the time she had recently started her visual exploration mixing calligraphy and photographic imagery. Each summer since her first visit, Terada has returned to photo-eye to share some of her favorite images that she has produced in the last year. Every visit is quite a treat. I have asked Terada to tell us a little bit about these new unique pieces." — Anne Kelly
