from the book Iraq | Perspectives

A Closer Look — Iraq | Perspectives
"The perspectives are straight forward: literal views from the eyes of the soldiers — through the windows of Humvees and the green aura of night vision goggles. The technique is as clever as it is simple, but renders results that far outstrip what could potentially feel gimmicky in lesser hands. The twice framed images in Windows show a street view reality of life for Iraqis, complete with blast walls, trash, rubble and decay. Through the small windows we catch glimpses of life in a country devastated by war, yet it is a restrictive view. " — Sarah Bradley

Interview with Laurie Tümer
Also on display along with the Michael Levin exhibit CONTINUUM are new Cloud images by local photographer Laurie Tümer.
Over the years photographer Laurie Tümer has photographed a variety of subjects and has worked in a wide variety of processes. One of the many things that I have always loved about Tümer is that she has never been afraid to jump out of her own box. Tümer's images range from studies made in her garden, to tougher subjects like pesticides and oil drilling to most recently her series I'd Rather Look at Clouds.
Laurie has agreed to tell us a little more about herself and her work. Enjoy! — Anne Kelly

photo-eye Book Reviews

from the book From Uncertain to Blue
|
From Uncertain to Blue by Keith Carter
"It is Carter's 'unsentimental eye' that drew me to this work. For me, Carter's more recent work is too sentimental, but this earlier work speaks in a language that I understand clearly. The photographs in this book are full of clarity and photographic description, much like the work of Walker Evans. Carter used this language of American photography to describe the various climates of Texas. His idea of the 'nothingness' that he photographed is rich. " — Tom Leininger from the review of From Uncertain to Blue by Keith Carter

 from the book Daniel Meadows
|
Daniel Meadows by Val Williams
"In 1973, Daniel Meadows got a UK Arts Council grant of £750. He bought a double-decker bus, converted the top deck into a bedroom, fitted a toilet, kitchen and darkroom and converted the bottom deck into an exhibition space. With all his equipment in place, Meadows hit the road. His goal; to provide a photographic survey of the people of England. " — Colin Pantall from the review of Daniel Meadows by Val Williams

Eric Cousineau: American Motel
The price will increase upon publication and as the edition sells. Order before March 6, 2012 to reserve a copy at $1000.
"These images reflect upon a time when driving across the country was a right of passage into the American frontier. The apparent symbolism of the motel is still strung across the highways and interstates, existing in many ways as an artifact in a roadside attraction. A photograph of a purple coach blending into the texture and design of decades old pink wallpaper expands the idea that Cousineau is navigating in the fashion of a 21st century archeologist — uncovering a beautiful and unique past of a nation that was quick to rise and somewhere along the way left its distinctive reminisce all across the Midwest. Cousineau shows us these artifacts tastefully, without delving into the underbelly of the low-budget motel. He is preserving a part of America's past — and letting the rest of us who are a little too weary of embarking on a true American road trip a glimpse of what we are missing out on." — From Antone Dolezal's introduction
