Interviews: Cig Harvey on You Look At Me Like An Emergency

photo-eye has been proud to exhibit Cig Harvey's work on the Photographer's Showcase for many years. In Harvey's most famous images, a lone woman fills the frame. Wearing a beautiful dress, the woman's face is often obscured, her form is juxtaposed with the objects or scene around her — she stands on a buoy in the open ocean or poses with a halved green apple cinched in her belt. Harvey established her career with these evocative self-portraits but turned her camera to other models several years ago. Still, her work maintains its intimate storybook-like feel, as if existing in a realm of subtle magic between the personal and universal.

Interviews: Kelli Connell on Double Life

"Kelli Connell's exhibit Double Life has been on display at photo-eye since the beginning of May — and during that time has sparked many interesting conversations in the gallery. Connell's series appears to document the evolving relationship between two women, but by combining multiple negatives of the same model, Connell creates constructed realities. Her captivating images draw the viewer in and after further inspection, viewers naturally begin to wonder if the relationship they are looking at is between twins, cousin or lovers... but they come to find that Connell's work explores much more. Before the exhibit closes this Saturday, I asked Connell a few questions about her work." — Anne Kelly

 photo-eye Auctions
We've got twelve items on the block this week — featuring three items by Josef Koudelka. The first, a remarkably rare issue of the Czech news weekly "Respekt," where Koudelka's searing images of the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia appeared in 1990. For the second, a signed copy of Reconnaissance Wales, we started the bidding at the insanely low sum of $95 (seen elsewhere at upwards of $1000)!! Also available is the 2003 book Theatre Du Temps. Like Reconnaissance Wales it is an accordion-bound volume featuring Koudelka's haunting panoramic photographs, here focused on the city of Rome and its ruins. Another very different image of Italy can be seen in Guido Guidi's amazing, melancholy book from 1995 Varianti. Also on the block: the true first (French) edition of Robert Frank's Les Américains, Ed Van Der Elsken's Sweet Life (1st American Edition), and more.

Bids shown below are current as of 2:05 pm MT, 06.27.2012

Paul Graham: The Present Paul Graham: The Present

"The images in this book come unbidden from the streets of New York, but are not quite what we might expect, for each moment is brought to us with its double — two images taken from the same location, separated only by the briefest fraction of time. We find ourselves in sibling worlds, where a businessman with an eye patch becomes, an instant later, a man with an exaggerated wink; a woman eating a banana walks towards us, and a small focus shift reveals the blind man right behind her." — the publisher
