Lee Friedlander: New Mexico
Starting with this week's newsletter we are highlighting some of our collectible, out-of-print inventory that we have in-stock, available to purchase.
New Mexico
Photographs by Lee Friedlander. Introduction by Andrew Smith.
Radius Books, Santa Fe, 2008.
Friedlander has been visiting Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and northern New Mexico since the late 60s. This new volume of work presents a sequence of images made during his travels in these regions between 1995 and the present. Armed with his signature Hasselblad camera and wandering the back roads in an assortment of rental cars, Friedlander has journeyed from the Plaza of Santa Fe to adobe strewn neighborhood barrios and into the gorgeous, high-altitude desert. In Lee Friedlander: New Mexico, we see the same attentive curiosity that we've come to expect. He is a master of creating unity out of diverse shapes and complex tones in the two dimensional picture plane.
Both the regular and limited editions of this beautifully designed book are out-of-print and highly sought after. This limited edition is being sold for nearly $600 elsewhere.

Luigi Fieni's Soul Steps
The journey my destination, the nature my sanctuary.
Kneeling to the shrine my invocation fades as the last word of a prayer lasted for the whole pilgrimage.
The body weakens as my soul gets stronger.
The sound of my steps echoes in my soul as the path crosses with my prayers.
Tracks, lines then inner roads as scars healing on this very soil. Sweat as dew awakening my soul.
Soul steps, spoors behind my trail.
There is no end to this path, which gets lost beyond the horizon. And I get lost as well. —Luigi Fieni

A Closer Look — Objects in Mirror
" Objects in Mirror is a collection of essays and a few fragments from larger written pieces assembled by designer Hans Gremmen 'to give insight into his daily practice.' With the idea of the American landscape high on his mind in 2011, Objects in Mirror came to be as part of the annual 'Looking over the shoulder of...' program from Utrecht's FOTODOK. Images make up the framework of the dialogue, but the book is fundamentally about perceptions of the United States as understood through prevailing relationships to its landscape — most often, that of National Parks." — from Sarah Bradley's post on photo-eye Blog

A Closer Look — Cave Drawings
"Lex Thompson's Cave Drawings contains little text aside from the brief 67-word artist statement and a signature page in the rear that notes the edition of 100 copies. The simple reproduction of a line drawing illustrates the cover and following the title page, the first image sets the mood for our journey through the inside of the Earth." — from Melanie McWhorter's post on photo-eye Blog

Nothing is Hidden by Lynne Cohen
"If I could enter Lynne Cohen's photographs with the eye of an archeologist exploring a foreign or forgotten culture, I might detect a certain unarticulated power, through sheer recurrence of form, in the drop ceiling or the potted tree. In the absence of any definitive demonstration of function, the unoccupied rooms she photographs take on a mysterious significance, and my imagination runs wild in the face of their uncanny presence and nebulous purposes." — from Karen Jenkin's review of Nothing is Hidden by Lynne Cohen

My Dakota by Rebecca Norris Webb
"Do not think of this book as a chance to see Rebecca Norris Webb's home state of South Dakota. It is not. Think of it more as a visual journal on loss. Not loss for a time that has passed, but a more personal grief. Rebecca Norris Webb made a series of photographs where the landscape is loss, specifically, that of her brother who died suddenly. Norris Webb begins the book by saying it is an elegy for home." — from Tom Leininger's review of My Dakota by Rebecca Norris Webb

PART THREE -
The REMIX Culture: Appropriation Art and Fair Use in the Digital Age
Wednesday, August 15, 2012 6:30-8:00 pm
photo-eye Gallery is located at
376-A Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501
photo-eye Gallery is pleased to present a Summer Lecture Series in collaboration with New Mexico Lawyers for the Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to providing artists and arts organizations with pro bono legal assistances and educational programming.
As issues of appropriation and remixing increasingly flood our culture, copyright infringement lawsuits are on the rise. In the final part of our Art Law series, a range of experts from across the legal, business and creative realms of art (an attorney, a dealer, an arts consultant and an appropriation artist), will discuss the creative methods and ideas associated with appropriation in art today.
Using the facts from the high profile Cariou vs Prince appropriation case, the panel will discuss the importance of appropriation and forms of visual referencing in our culture, the differences between transformative works and infringement and whether current copyright laws provide sufficient protection while preserving an artist's freedom to reference the work of others.
All events are free and open to the public on a first come, first serve basis.

Anders Petersen: City Diary
"To Anders Petersen everything is private and what is private is everything. That which is private exposes the very nature of humanity, what binds us and what lies between us. Petersen's photographs almost appear to be the work of a wide-eyed innocent, a young boy in a state of permanent amazement traveling through an alien wonderland with its secret love encounters and bewildering adult conflicts. His pictures are intimate—lovers in the night, people in the street, inmates in Swedish prisons, patrons in a Hamburg bar—and disclose often unpleasant details with a probing, somewhat detached eye." —the publisher READ MORE
