The Nude — Classical, Cultural, Contemporary

Opening Reception on Friday, February 15, 2013, 5-7pm
Exhibition runs through April 20th, 2013
photo-eye Gallery is located at 376-A Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of The Nude — Classical, Cultural, Contemporary. This group exhibition includes work from a wide variety of photographers all depicting the nude, using the human form as a unique means of expression. The photographs included in this exhibition range from classical studies, to the exploration of cultural and contemporary themes; some are playful and some investigate more existential realms, while others manage to combine multiple elements. We hope you will join us at the opening reception to celebrate this truly diverse line-up of fifteen artists all exploring themes of The Nude.

Artists include: Evan Baden, Keith Carter, Neil Craver, Imogen Cunningham, Chris Enos, Bear Kirkpatrick, Joey L., Patti Levey, Peter Ogilvie, Carla van de Puttelaar, Karin Rosenthal, Jock Sturges, Laurie Tümer, Jo Whaley and Zoë Zimmerman.

 photo-eye Book Reviews
Gerry Johansson: Deutschland

"Occasionally a body of work is launched in disguise. It depicts the various synapses and chain reactions in a photographer's brain, but under the subterfuge of worldly description. Although Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson has been edging in this direction for a while now, his most recent book Deutschland is the culmination so far. Deutschland consists of simple square pictures of post-industrial Germany, one per page, each labeled with a location, then arranged alphabetically by caption in a thick book. No dates. Helvetica typeface. A beige fabric cover that conveys quiet efficiency. Thumbing the pages feels a bit like waiting in a modern European airport listening to Kraftwerk. What could be more orderly? More objective? What could be more German?" — from Blake Andrews's review of Deutschland by Gerry Johansson

Andrea Camuto: Terrain of Loss

"Refugee camps and other locations of war's diaspora are often over flowing with the most vulnerable in society; the poor, children and their families who have moved away from the violence to protect their lives and those of their loved ones. The long history of conflict in Afghanistan has left many of these very people living on the fringes. Photographer Andrea Camuto had the opportunity to meet and document the lives of some of these Afghans, a group of people who occupied a bombed-out former Russian embassy on the outskirts of Kabul." — from Melanie McWhorter's review of Terrain of Loss by Andrea Camuto

John MacLean: New Colour Guide

"John MacLean sees with an awakened eye. His New Colour Guide is as much about artful visual perception as it is a query into the power of color. MacLean clearly delights in observing the world, and that is one of the implicit themes of this book of photographs: "Look at all there is to see!" Playfulness fuels his vision as if his investigation were a kind of game. In fact, he began this — and all of his prior book projects — with an idea or question related to place, culture or the medium. From there, his adventure unfolded. For New Colour Guide, MacLean asked, 'How does colour influence our perception of an image?'" — from Janelle Lynch's review of New Colour Guide by John MacLean

 Book of the Week
Michael Wolf: Architecture of Density Michael Wolf: Architecture of Density

"Stunning and sobering, the photographs of high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong by German photographer Michael Wolf reveal his personal fascination with life in mega-cities. Having lived there for several years, Wolf began to document Hong Kong's extreme development and complex urban dynamics, and how these factors play into the relationships between public and private space, anonymity and individuality, in one of the most densely populated cities on the planet. His close-up view takes the repetitive facades and colourful palettes out of their architectural context, instead offering urban patterns." —the publisher READ MORE
