Book of the Week: A Pick by Jeffrey Ladd

Book of the Week: A Pick by Jeffrey Ladd
Sergio Larrain

"Having been a self-proclaimed Sergio Larrain junkie for long while, I heard about and waited patiently for this book's release date. I wondered if there would be images that haven't been published before. I didn't realize that 1/2 the book would be of images new to me — and the best part is, much of it is even better than the work I had known." — Jeffrey Ladd

Photobook Remix #5 looks at two seminal German books from the 1980s—Michael Schmidt's Waffenruhe (Ceasefire) and a somewhat lesser-known title that actually served as a model for the latter book, Zuhaus by Einar Schleef. Emerging from the same West Berlin milieu recorded by Schmidt and Schleef, the music of brutalist/industrial pioneers Einst├╝rzende Neubauten ('collapsing new buildings') is a fitting sonic backdrop to what critic Gerry Badger describes as the "picturesque miasma...the fetid poetry and...introspective gloom" of Schmidt's visceral images.

     photo-eye Book Reviews

    Lori Nix: The City

"The City is artist Lori Nix's first monograph... The cover image, Library, is stunning and tells you everything you need to know about the rest of the images contained within. The titular library is in the midst of prolonged decay; three trees, possibly aspens, are growing up from the ground, fed natural light and presumably water, through a gaping hole in the roof of the structure... Dust covers everything, and library chairs are scattered as if they were hastily abandoned before the unknown cataclysm that precipitated the abandonment, and thus decay, of the place." — from David Ondrik's review of The City by Lori Nix

    Keizo Kitajima: USSR 1991

"Kitajima shows Moscow in the bleak overcast early months of spring 1990, the industrial tin factory workers around the third most populated city in Russia, Novosibirsk and the nearby coal mining areas in Kemerovo, the Nuclear Physics Institute meeting in Akademgorodok, former Korean and Japanese citizens in the once Japanese island of Sakhalin, nomads and a Communist-Muslim politician in Uzbek Republic, and life on the Armenian border. No colors are vibrant; there is no overwhelming sense of happiness — more likely the opposite — in many images. Maybe the heavy weight of winter hangs in the air, but maybe there is something else in this picture of a nation." — from Melanie McWhorter's review of USSR 1991 by Keizo Kitajima

    Atsushi Fujiwara: Nangokusho

"Part travelogue, part homage, Atsushi Fujiwara's Nangokusho pays tribute to Fujiwara's grandfather and investigates the southern region of Japan where he lived. A teacher and poet, Fujiwara's grandfather unfortunately passed away before the two could meet, but this book is an attempt to bridge that gap... Melancholic scraps of evidence, Fujiwara's empty and somber images not only attempt to reach back and make sense of his past and family, but also offer a somber look at Japan's past." — from Adam Bell's review of Nangokusho by Atsushi Fujiwara

    Patricia Galagan: The Green Fuse

Thanks to all who attended the opening of The Green Fuse, photographs by Patricia Galagan at photo-eye Bookstore this past Friday. The exhibit will be on display in photo-eye Bookstore, 370 Garcia Street, Santa Fe through Friday, October 18th, 2013. photo-eye has signed copies of her exhibition catalogue The Green Fuse.

The Green Fuse project documents the visual and biological transformation of a forest in the days, months, and years following a major wildfire. These photographs confirm that although a wildfire reduces trees to standing charcoal and the ground to ash, the cycle of nature resumes with new green growth as soon as there is moisture.
