Camera-Toting Odysseus Confronts Painful Sights
Sebastião Salgado Reviewed in the New York Times
"'I must tell you, the things that I shoot
don't happen in my town. I am a photographer. I must do reportage.'
That compulsion has resulted in compelling images of famine
victims in the Sahel region of Africa, of manual workers around
the world and of the vast number of people displaced by natural
and man-made disasters...A selection of those pictures is
on view...through Aug. 16."—The New York Times

"It has been said that the way in which artists interpret
nature tells us how a society understands its relationship
to the world. My work is about visualizing the contemporary
man-made landscape in its constant evolution of expansion
and retreat. It is about seeing elusive detail in natural
places where man-made artifacts are also present."—Carol

The
Russian Avant-Garde Book: 1910-1934
Along with the Richter retrospective, the Russian Avant-Garde
Book show was the last show at MoMA before they temporarily
relocated to Queens. The Russians featured in this show, including
El Lissitzky and Alexandr Rodchenko, were phenomenal photographers,
designers, and dreamers. A fabulous catalogue to an important
show.

Fuss: My Ghost—Signed
Photograms of swirling smoke and a child's lace dress; a flock
of birds exposed to the subtlety of photographic paper; daguerreotypes
of butterflies and swams. These are the subjects of Fuss'
images, each of which revolves around the theme of death,
loss, and a certain fleetingness of life. Nine-color printing
and exquisite papers only add to the grace of this book.
