Leni
Riefenstahl Turns 100
Leni Riefenstahl is one of the last figures alive
who was close to Hitler, acting as his cultural emissary,
and whose Nazi rally film, "Triumph of the Will"
set her career as a filmmaker in motion. She has been beset
for decades by her association with the Nazis, though her
skill, even genius according to some, as a photographer
and filmmaker is acknowledged. Several books are available
of
Riefenstahl's
work.

Gloria Baker Feinstein
"When I was little, I used to dive deep under the water
when swimming, then come up to the top as slowly as I could,
creeping toward the surface, my arms extended behind me, my
face lifted straight up toward the light above. I would try
very hard to keep my eyes open as my face sliced through the
water. I wanted to see the change occur. I wanted to witness
the transition between the murky, private, silent fantasy
below and the less abstract world above. I wanted to see it
happen so that I could pay attention to how everything changed
shape and color and texture. But my eyes always snapped shut
just at the last second..."—Feinstein

Gloria
Baker Feinstein: Convergence
This is the first monograph on Kansas City photographer
Feinstein, whose rich imagery—in
which children are the principal characters— shows
a rare maturity deserving of attention on a national level.
She displays an uncanny knack of recording the absurdity
and joy of childhood without patronizing her willing but
unwitting subjects.

Naoya
Hatakeyama
Hatakeyama's work, when viewed from a certain overarching
perspective, is about the transformation of rock—limestone
in particular. His photographs of lime quarries and factories
are formal gems while his Blast images—photographs
of detonations in quarries—are mesmerizing in their
intensity. This is some of the most exciting work currently
coming out of Japan!

Bettina
Rheims: Animal
Bettina Rheims is well known for her erotically charged photographs
of women. In this hard-to-find monograph, she points her camera
in a different direction—at stuffed animals—creating
a collection of natures mortes. This project, though
a departure for Rheims, nonetheless bears her signature style.
