Debbie Fleming Caffery: Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
In June 2006, the Open Society Institute announced 31 investigative journalism grants to promote a national conversation on racism and inequality in America. Offering what they called Katrina Media Fellowships, the Open Society Institute created the special media competition to inform and deepen public understanding of the critical and social issues that the hurricane of 2005 laid bare.
Debbie Fleming Caffery, a photo-eye Gallery artist, was the recipient of one of these prestigious fellowships. Her project, entitled "Portrait of Neglect: Injustice of Hurricane Katrina," is a documentation through portraits and landscapes of the effects of both the initial natural disaster and the man-made devastation that came in the wake of the storm. The primary focus is on the African-American population of her native Louisiana, which was widely displaced immediately after the storm and whose neighborhoods are only now, more than one year after the storm, being cleaned up. The work shows the burgeoning spirit of survival, community and hope as people begin rebuilding their lives in the face of continuing racism, economic injustice, and enormous political and economic adversity.

Michael Matsil's portfolio Mise en Scene
"Every one of us has our own internal way of ordering what we see. Our senses elaborate and respond emotionally to raw space by perceiving such things as color, texture and material: the physical qualities of 'place.' The artist has the ability to take 'place' and arrange it, edit it, idealize it and produce a still scene.... These images, expressed as giclee prints, are about process, and the fixing of momentary, spontaneous tangents between individual perception and environment. They endeavor to distill the complex and chaotic places around us into a purposeful and seemingly choreographed scene. This activity points toward our own sense of place and where we choose to place ourselves as observers."—Michael Matsil |

Gert Jochems: RUS
"Between 2001 and 2005, Belgian photographer
Gert Jochems made seven extended trips to
the outskirts of Russia, especially Siberia. In his
unpolished, expressive photographs, he offers
a highly subjective impression of the barren,
dead-end landscape, where people struggle to
survive under extreme circumstances."—the publisher READ MORE

Ken Ohara: With
"Ken Ohara's photographic series of one-hour exposure portraits create in their final form a new identity for each subject. The traditional evaluations we make of a portrait, i.e., How do you look? are lost in the blur of a passing hour. The soft outlines of heads and bodies take on a new power in their loss of detail, and we look to the objects that frame each sitter to give us a context for identity. Like Meatyard before him, Ohara's collective subjects create a wry and melancholy portrait of the absent artist."—the publisher READ MORE

Nobuyoshi Araki: Subway Love
"From 1963 until 1972, the young Nobuyoshi Araki obsessively photographed his fellow passengers during his daily commute on the Tokyo subway. Yawning businessmen, women dozing with their legs splayed, kids who mugged for the camera—Araki captured them all candidly on film, without using a viewfinder. Now, over thirty years later, Subway Love brings back to life these vital and various "prisoners" crammed into their subway cars."—the publisher READ MORE

Peter Granser: Coney Island
"With
precise, witty color, Peter Granser captures the morbid charm
of "America's Playground" on the Brooklyn beachfront,
with its dilapidated amusement parks, made
famous long ago in the black-and-white work of
Diane Arbus, Weegee, and Bruce Gilden. Granser's
more recent tours found
sweaty beach bums and sailors in drag, shabby
snack bars and rusty roller coasters, and recorded
them all with a sympathetic eye to the aura of
splendor gone seedy."—the publisher READ MORE

Rebecca Norris Webb: The Glass Between Us
"Seven years ago, Rebecca Norris Webb wandered into the Coney Island Aquarium and spotted a white beluga whale soaring high above the heads of visitors, who were reflected in the glass. Since then, Webb has photographed urban animals in New York, Chicago, Havana, Istanbul, New Delhi, Paris, and other cities around the world, often viewing the animals between some sort of transparent barrier. She shows us that in a certain light, the glass between us can be a window and a mirror."—the publisher READ MORE
