Adrian Chesser's portfolio, i have something to tell you
When I tested positive for HIV and was diagnosed with AIDS, I had an extreme physical reaction whenever I thought about having to tell my friends and family. Looking at this reaction more closely, I realized that it was the same reaction I had as a kid whenever I had to disclose something uncomfortable to my parents, fearing rejection or even abandonment if larger secrets were revealed.
It occurred to me that it might be possible to overcome this paralyzing fear by photographing my friends as I told them about my diagnosis. I invited each friend to come to my studio to have their picture taken, a simple head shot for a new project. Each sitter's reaction was unique depending upon their own experience of loss, illness and death, creating a portrait of unguarded, unsettling honesty.
While these photos are probably the worst pictures ever taken of my friends, they are undoubtedly the most beautiful.

Leica European Publishers Award for Photography 2007
The Leica European Publishers Award for Photography is a major initiative to encourage the publication of contemporary photography. Open to photographers world-wide, the competition is a unique collaboration between seven European Publishers seeking submissions of a substantial, completed and unpublished photographic book project. The winning project is then published in book form simultaneously by each of the publishers in their own country, resulting in perhaps the most extensive cultural collaboration currently existing in Europe.
Entries for the 2007 Award will be accepted from 1st January 2007 until 31st January 2007, and must be sent with the application form and a signed copy of the rules. For more information please visit the website for Dewi Lewis Publishing.

| William Klein: Moscow
In this, the third of Klein's city books (published the same year as Tokyo) all of the characteristics of his inimitable style are present... Significantly, though, many of the images in this book subvert the cold war idea of the Soviet Union as a drab, depressing place. Amidst the laughter and leisure of everyday life in the city, even the soldiers cavort jovially in the street. Whether or not Klein's intention was to humanize the Soviets at a time when the cold war was in full swing, in his pictures Moscow comes across as an altogether more amiable place than it was portrayed in the Western media of the time.

Upcoming Winter Titles from Nazraeli
photo-eye's pick for the best new book on Nazraeli's list might be Todd Hido's new monograph, Between the Two. In this book, he juxtaposes his acclaimed photos of abandoned houses with motel room portraits that exemplify his ability to "let seediness shine with an internal beauty." David Maisel's newest book, Oblivion, in contrast to his earlier vibrantly colored images, explores Los Angeles using black and white aerial photos with an x-ray quality. Witness No. 1, initially conceived and edited by Stephen Shore is a limited edition series, with the second volume slated to have Daido Moriyama as editor. Other books on the list for winter are a retrospective by Camille Solyagua, Neil Selkirk's fantastic portraits of Washington lobbyists, and three new One Picture Books by Daido Moriyama, Emi Anrakuji, and Junko Takahashi.
