photo-eye Booksigning for John Cohen's Past Present Peru

photo-eye is pleased to host a booksigning for John Cohen for his newest book Past Present Peru on Friday, October 15th, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00pm in photo-eye Bookstore, 370 Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM.

"Past Present Peru combines photographs, textiles, music and film in an ambitious book object. The photographs are for Cohen a "fragmented collection of visual insights, a record of deepening awareness" that depicts the diversity of Peruvian life including religious festivals, potato farming, and the recent introduction of hydroelectricity. The textiles, reproduced in luscious colour, embody pre-Columbian craft traditions more than 5,000 years old.

John Cohen is a photographer, musician and filmmaker who has cultivated a fifty-year long fascination with the people, cultures and landscape of Peru. Cohen took his first photographs in Peru in 1956 and has returned many times since to continue documenting, adding musical and film recordings to his still images. Cohen's photographs, stored for years in boxes in a barn near his home, and the music, today archived at the Smithsonian Institute, have not been published in their entirety until now." — the publisher

Chris McCaw on his Sunburn series.

At first glance McCaw's photographs are subtle black and white images with Zen compositions... beautiful abstractions with suggestions of landscape. At second glance you may notice that some of the gestural streaks have dimension and warmer tones. Though one can appreciate McCaw's work just based on its beauty, it is only natural for the mind to want to understand how these images are created.

Very simply put, McCaw builds his own large format cameras, places vintage silver gelatin paper into the film holder (instead of film) and leaves his lens open for an extended period of time. Because the lens is open for so long, the sun burns into the photographic paper, at times creating holes, and inverts the image from a negative to a positive, a process called solarization.
