photo-eye Booksigning for John Cohen's Past Present Peru
photo-eye is pleased to host a booksigning for John Cohen for his newest book Past Present Peru on Friday, October 15th, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00pm in photo-eye Bookstore, 370 Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM.
" Past Present Peru combines photographs, textiles, music and film in an ambitious book object. The photographs are for Cohen a "fragmented collection of visual insights, a record of deepening awareness" that depicts the diversity of Peruvian life including religious festivals, potato farming, and the recent introduction of hydroelectricity. The textiles, reproduced in luscious colour, embody pre-Columbian craft traditions more than 5,000 years old.
John Cohen is a photographer, musician and filmmaker who has cultivated a fifty-year long fascination with the people, cultures and landscape of Peru. Cohen took his first photographs in Peru in 1956 and has returned many times since to continue documenting, adding musical and film recordings to his still images. Cohen's photographs, stored for years in boxes in a barn near his home, and the music, today archived at the Smithsonian Institute, have not been published in their entirety until now." — the publisher
The book includes two clothbound hardcover books, one album with 3 music CDs and another album with 5 film DVDs housed in a slipcase.

| Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934
"Man Ray invented a new aesthetic for photography. At a time when photography was finding its way as a medium, his photographs became works of art in themselves. During his lifetime he said of his work: 'I began as a painter. In photographing my canvases I discovered the value of reproduction in black and white. The day came when I destroyed the painting and kept the reproduction...'" READ MORE
Also on the block: A lovely Grove first edition of Robert Frank's epochal The Americans; Cartier-Bresson's classic Les Européens; Bill Brandt's A Night in London, and More! |

Chris McCaw on his Sunburn series.
At first glance McCaw's photographs are subtle black and white images with Zen compositions... beautiful abstractions with suggestions of landscape. At second glance you may notice that some of the gestural streaks have dimension and warmer tones. Though one can appreciate McCaw's work just based on its beauty, it is only natural for the mind to want to understand how these images are created.
Very simply put, McCaw builds his own large format cameras, places vintage silver gelatin paper into the film holder (instead of film) and leaves his lens open for an extended period of time. Because the lens is open for so long, the sun burns into the photographic paper, at times creating holes, and inverts the image from a negative to a positive, a process called solarization.

Hiroshi Sugimoto
"The spectacular series by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (*1948 in Tokyo) are characterized by matchless clarity and presence. His works are always an absolute embodiment of his chosen visual motif, reduced to its essence.
This absolutely exquisite retrospective is an expanded edition of Hatje Cantz's 2005 volume. It is the first to feature works from all of Sugimoto's series to date: his celebrated portraits of wax figures, his incredible seascapes that seem to suggest a person's first conscious view of the ocean, the extremely long exposures of theaters which elevate the white, luminescent cinema screen and transform it into a magical image of an altar and the fascinating dioramas of scientific display cases, which invite us to travel far into the past. Additions to the original edition are two new groups of works, 'Lightning Fields' (2006) and 'Photogenic Drawings' (2007)."—the publisher
The first edition of this expanded retrospective is now selling for around $200-700.

Cuba, Sí, Part 1 - Cuba: Campo Adentro
"I often contend that if you have never thought much about photographs, it can be hard to appreciate the art of photography with only one image in front of you. On screen or in print form, the art becomes more apparent when multiple expressions are at hand; the photographer's myriad choices embody the medium's singular, creative heart and distinguish one photo from another." —From George Slade's review of Cuba: Campo Adentro with photographs by Susan S. Bank

Cuba, Sí, Part 2 - The Cubans
"In the mid-to late 1990s, I sensed that every ninth or tenth new photobook was another photographic exploration of, encounter with, or insight into the embargoed island of Cuba. By the early 2000s, not having gone to Cuba seemed to be a handicap, or at least very unusual, among the art-world people in the know. Like never having gone to New York." —From George Slade's review of The Cubans with photographs by Jack Beckham Combs

Cuba, Sí, Part 3 - Cuba
"The third and final book in this current Cuban trio is the most puzzling to me. Jeffrey Milstein's web site shows examples of the underbellies of airplanes, published in his first monograph, along with an intriguing set of photographs from India and other portfolios that reflect his training as an architect, in numerous views of idiosyncratic houses, and orderless pictures of scrap materials that posit a visual counterpoint to architecture's tight geometries. Milstein clearly draws inspiration from the melding of design and lives." —From George Slade's review of Cuba with photographs by Jeffrey Milstein
