Antone Dolezal

Photographer / Managing Editor, photo-eye Magazine

Grassland.
PHIL UNDERDOWN

This is the first print on demand book that blew me away. The small details in this little gem are something to admire and take note of for anyone considering POD as a publishing option.
My Grandma Was a Turtle.
CUNY JANSSEN

The design of this book is fantastic, and for me a bit personal and somewhat nostalgic. The photographs were taken in Bartlesville, Oklahoma… the town I grew up in. I am amazed at Janssen's ability to capture such an intimate portrait of a place that many would pass by without giving a second thought.
Happy Tonite.
ED JONES AND JAMES WELCH (ED.)

The Archive of Modern Conflict publishes great books, and this is one of my favorites. It's the only book I own that showcases contemporary Chinese photography… and it comes with a choice of three pretty sweet little prints.
The Sound of Two Songs.
MARK POWER

Beautiful design and images. Not much to say other than this is probably my favorite of the last year.
aurora borealis.
AGNES THOR

The book is 3-hole stitch bound with a debossed cotton cover that looks and feels so delicate alongside the breathtaking imagery. Aurora Borealis transports you into a surreal world… very very well done.
Family.
CHRIS VERENE

A great personal portrait of Verene's family. An emotionally engaging story on the human condition and family dynamics.
who will stay.
RAYMOND MEEKS

Raymond Meeks' artist books are always a treat. Beautifully designed and thoughtfully edited, Who Will Stay is up there as one of the most original books in my collection.
Infidel.
TIM HETHERINGTON

War photography can sometimes leave you walking away with a sense that the world is a pretty gloomy place. Or even worse, make you feel disgust and contempt for your fellow man. Not this book -- I took away a sense of pride at our natural abilities to form bonds and brotherly love… kind of ironic, huh?
Drinking the Kool-Aid.
ED TEMPLETON

Ed Templeton published a few great books this year. The design of Drinking the Kool-Aid is really what makes it for me. I think Aron Morel consistently publishes some of the most unique and thoughtful objects in the photobook world, this being one of them.
Light. On the South Side.
MICHAEL ABRAMSON

Published by the vinyl archive Numero Group, this book is everything I ever wanted. Michael Abramson put together a fantastic series of images reflecting on Chicago's Southside nightclubs during the 1970s. Often humorous and with a tinge of gritty realness, this book also comes with double vinyl LP that brings the funk in a very serious way.
