Collector/Critic

From Here to There.
ALEC SOTH

A refreshingly quirky, unpretentious and personal mid-career survey, with images from several recent projects.
Henri Cartier-Bresson.
HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON

Everyone already has a shelf full of Cartier-Bresson books. Add this one for its fantastic maps, detailed chronology and readable essay.
The Photograms.
LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY-NAGY

Throw out everything that preceded this volume; this is now the definitive reference resource on this body of work. Look more closely for the subtle iterations of composition and the intricate plays of light and dark.
America by Car.
LEE FRIEDLANDER

Witty compositional rule breaking at its finest.
The Long Now.
UTA BARTH

A long overdue retrospective monograph, chronicling every project in her career.
Zwelethu Mthethwa.
ZWELETHU MTHETHWA

The first and only monograph available on this important South African photographer.
Paul Strand in Mexico.
PAUL STRAND

An exhaustively researched gap filler for your Strand library.
Starburst.
KEVIN MOORE (ED.)

This show (and its accompanying catalogue) successfully tells an inclusive story of the surprising diversity of 1970s color photography. Given how influential this period and its many artists have been on contemporary photographic practice, it's an excellent primer for those looking for background and historical precedents for today's work.
Framing the West.
TIMOTHY H. O'SULLIVAN

The best book on O'Sullivan I have encountered, with excellent reproductions and scholarly background. Reading this monograph, I saw more clearly how O'Sullivan carefully framed the broad empty space of the West, without going for cheap grandeur. Fans of Robert Adams will find an unexpected set of connections to follow.
Helios.
EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE

This hefty volume has helped me connect the dots between the Muybridge of majestic Western vistas and the Muybridge of cinematic stop motion figure studies. While I haven't seen the show in person, this exhibition catalogue overflows with ideas and interpretations.
