Tokyo Elegy. Photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki. Tojusha, Tokyo, 1981. 265 pp. Octavo. First printing. Printed wrappers in illustrated dust jacket. Printed obi (belly band). Black-and-white and color illustrations. Text in Japanese.
Amid the seemingly endless list of Araki publications, those published up until the early 1980s most sought after. This scarce Araki title shows the artist still developing what would become his familiar themes. This volume collects images taken between 1967 and 1972 and finds him slightly more formally rigorous than some of his other books--but it’s all relative.
