Paris de Nuit. Photographs by Brassaï. Text by Paul Morand. Editions Arts et Metiers Graphiques, Paris, 1933. 74 pp. Quarto. First edition. Spiral bound with stiff card wrappers. 60 gravure reproductions.
"Paris de Nuit is a ravishing book object in a purely physical sense. The printing represents arguably the most luscious gravure ever seen, the blacks being so rich and deep that after handling the book one expects to find sooty deposits all over one's fingers. The gradation of tones is wonderfully subtle, describing an apparently infinite range of black and near-black tones...one should think of it as among the best produced and influential photobooks ever."--Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, vol. I
Very Good; a very presentable copy of a delicate book; typical wear along spiral binding with a couple of rings detached at crown and base of front and rear covers; moderate edge wear; small loss (about 1 1/2" sq.) to lower corner of front cover with an adjacent crease; smaller loss to lower corner of rear cover; inexpert repairs (black ink used to fill in wear along edges); scattered foxing.
