Nás Hrad. Photographs by Josef Sudek. Josef R. Vilimek, Prague, 1948. 204 pp. text + plates. Quarto. First edition. SIGNED on title page. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. Sepia toned gravure reproductions.
Much of the material in this 1948 Sudek volume was reprinted recently in Saint Vitus's Cathedral, the sixth volume in Torst's "Josef Sudek: Works" series. St. Vitus’s Cathedral, the spiritual heart of Czech nationalism and the burial place of its kings, sits atop foundations that date back to 925. Sudek shot it at many points in his long career. For him, it is a theater of light, an arena of formal and compositional exploration that is virtually infinite.
Near Fine- in Near Fine jacket; front hinge repaired; moderate wear to board extremities; fragile jacket moderately worn; edges internally reinforced, repairing one tear of 1" to rear panel and a few smaller tears at upper edge (less than 1/4"); small spot lower page edges.
