A Few Palm Trees. Photographs by Edward Ruscha. Heavy Industry Publications, Los Angeles, 1971. Duodecimo (7 x 5 1/2 in.). 14 black-and-white offset prints on white 80 lb. Vicksburg Vellum test paper; bound by sewing and gluing, cover of black Hammermill Duro-Glo paper. Second half of book is blank as issued.
Continuing his concern with vernacular imagery, Ruscha documented a seemingly arbitrary collection of Palm Trees at specific locations in the L.A. area. Set against white backgrounds, they are oddly 'de-naturalized' and rendered into the familiar, iconic images of L.A. they have become.
