Nice copy of a not uncommon book. An important piece of turn-of-the-century popular culture. Paul Laurence Dunbar's poems highlight the dialect of turn-of-the-century African-Americans, introducing the language that would eventually make its way into the language of jazz and urban culture in later decades. The book is highlighted by 52 photos by The Hampton Institute Camera Club; their realism contrasts wonderfully with the intricate green tinted Art Nouveau decorations by Margaret Armstrong. The green cloth has black, maroon, white and gold gilt cover and spine illustrations also by Armstrong.
Near Fine; light abrasion to corners; moderate age darkening and foxing; tight binding. Cover and spine decorations sharp and clean.
